There is a weather station set up at one of our fire watch towers in the Lolo Nat forest, there is a sign that asks if your up there and the sign in date of over 3 days old sense the last re-set of the equipment please follow these instructions. It tells you how to reset the equipment and your supposed to give the info that is taken to the forest dept in town. kind of fun to see how things work the other one is in the Bob Marshal and is fully auto it even relays the info via satellite. The sensors are on top of the fire tower so you have to climb the stairs to do it, its worth it pretty nice view from the top.

Big, You're NOT stupid for going to to tend the animals in -30 temps, you're protecting your investment! Good on ya for doing it.

Sometimes I remind myself of this, I get to the barn open the door (that takes a snow shovel to do ) and the animals look at me like WHAT IN THE * H * ARE YOU DOING?? feed and clean the barn, the wife comes out kicking the door and yelling how did you get in without moving the snow? open the top half of the door take the coffee from her she crawls over the bottom half the door and we milk the cow and her goats. We harness up the boy's to the snow plow crawl over the bottom of the door again shovel out the big doors drive the team out put the wife and milk on the plow take them to the house. Over to my MIL/FIL to check them out and they look at me the very way the animals did WHAT THE * H * ARE YOU DOING ? With so many looking and thinking the same thing ONE HAS TO QUESTION THE SANITY OF THIS. :-laf

Sounds like a dream come true to me, BIG. My life long goal is to be able to get everything paid for at a fairly early age and be able to retire in Wyoming before Im too old to enjoy it. Thats where my mother and brother and sister are and I think its safe to say that they are lifers so the move would not be difficult. At 33 I think I have a better than average head start, hopefully life doesnt throw a wicked curve ball at us between now and then. Love the snowmobile pics, heres one of us the last time we were in Wyoming in the winter we took a ride christmas morning and some of the views were almost pretty enough to call heaven.

Hey no problem. I love walkin 'round the barn. Pics are awesome as always.

On the sub. I'm leaning towards the Davis vantage which is a notch down from the pro that most have here.

I just love picking out my own presents you always get exactly what you asked for :D :D

We have always done that she has no idea what im telling her I want and same with her telling me!! less chance of NOT GETTING WHAT YOU WANT. Hope you get what you want Wayne they are kind of fun to have. I have even won a free cups of coffee with them. The guys down at the cafe always asked how cold is it? I would wet my finger and hold it to the wind and,I would say what the weather station said when I left home to have breakfast at the cafe they would say, BS its not that cold BET ME!!! our local radio station dont get going until 6 am when it came on they say the temp and what kind of day it will be. I WIN YOUR BUYING :-laf

Until one time when my SIL came to refill the cups and said hey BIG what did that weather station at home say today?

I bought coffee for the next month!!

You could say I had the "if you want it get your a** out there and go earn it" attitude pounded into me from an early age. Pops was (and still is) tougher than nails and he aint one to talk the talk without walkin the walk he leads by example. As far back as I could remember he would hit the ground running long before the sun came up and did not stop until it was time to CRASH :-laf. To this day he does not know how to relax or do anything recreational I always thought this was normal behavior and have done the same since th day I graduated highschool I followed him and my uncles hanging steel. They beat me up for 6 or 7 years and in the process I learned how to weld. I took my 6g weld test and got in with a non union shop doing boiler and pressure vessel repair and pipe welding for the local utility companies and chemical plants which led me to my current job at Cristal Global in the maintenance dept. They are a company very similar to Dupont we make Titanium Tetrachloride and Titanium Dioxide. The work is good (if you enjoy looking through a weld lense all day) and the pay and ins. Is evem better. Theyve got an exceptional 401k and a pension that is 100% company vested. And the best part is I can literally write my own paycheck the overtime is always there if you want to work 16 hour days every day they will find something for me to glue together :-laf. Im very fortunate to have landed a job like this Im the youngest one there by 12 years and most are in their 50s and up. The wife has the same drive got her RN liscense and luckily shes not a big spender like women can be known for. We live very simple our newest vehicle is a 99 I meticulously maintain our vehicles they treat us well in return. The only debt weve got is our house weve got basic utility bills, innsurance ane property taxes, and thats it. We do splurge once a year and take a vacation somewhere, it makes the wife happy and gives her a reason to pinch pennies all year. People see our simplicity and are baffled  "what do you do with all your money" building a nest egg is all but unheard of anymore with most people

Wayne, at one time harbor in Ashtabula was an industrial giant. There were factories that literally employed 2000+ people back in the 50s. Today all but 4 or 5 large plants remaining, one of them ours. Most of the places closed up and relocated (you guessed it) over seas. Its erie to drive by such large facilities that are now sitting vacant. I too can only hope that doesnt one day happen to us. The good news is we do have sister plants in England, France, Saudi Arabia and South America and we are the lowest cost producer by far so unless something drastic happens I dont think they will ever go anywhere. But you never know.

I know how it is to get up early I still cant sleep in. For 20 years 1:30am every day for work, only 4 days regular and the 5th was all OT most of the time I worked Sunday thru Thursday unless Truck partner needed a day for something. But I still get up at 1:30 may 2. 30 and just cant get over it. My O4. 5 Dodge was my first NEW car. It was worth it NOW. Just everything that I have is used and its wearing out seems like all at once!!!!

I just pulled the trigger. Ordered the Davis 6250.

http://www.ambientweather.com/da6250.html

We'll hook it up to the net after I get it going. Thanks for the guidance! Now to see about mounting!!!

Congratulations, Wayne. If your Davis Instruments station is like mine, you'll enjoy many years of trouble free service.

I mounted my outdoor station on a treated wood 4"x4" post about 6' above the ground using 1/4" stainless steel lag bolts and washers. The post is placed far enough away from our house and my shop building to avoid swirling wind currents.

I would like to a weather station that gives the most instantaneous wind speed as possible mine only reads like every min and does not get the real wind gust speeds. I find that as an important feature I never thought about. I have a la crosse and it has been nothing but problems never works when we get the worst of weather in freeks out and looses data and now I can not use it on my computer since it is only 32bit and wont work on the new computer. I have had it for maybe 8 years not working all those years and was replace under warranty one time.

The Davis I got (see post above) has a 2 second refresh if I read it right. You bring up a good point about the wind speed and refresh rates. I had a lacrosse temp station. It was finicky.

I have a LaCrosse and am equally unhappy with it. I even hard wired it in hopes that I would get a reading quicker for wind speed but no luck. Only get an update every minute or so which sux when you are trying to deal with gusting winds...
