Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) What am I missing? Lugnut injector puller doesn't work? What now?

I found a thread on here somewhat recent detailing using a 1" close pipe nipple and a lugnut. No where did it mention to use washers or anything else, just the lugnut and nipple. So I did just that, took off a lug, threaded the nipple in where the injector hold down nut went and to my surprize just like it looked, the lugnut goes right into the nipple not even contacting it as I tighten. I have no idea where the lugnut is supposed to pry against nipple? It said to simply thread onto injector as as you tghten it will pull the injector out. The problem is the lug does not touch the nipple.



I wish I knew what else I needed. The hardware store does not have any washers that will fit both the lug and the nipple both. Any ideas?
 
BTW, injecotors are in tight, I wrapped them in electric tape and clamped vise grips on a few and they would not come out. They are original with 252k on them.
 
you can get the correct injector puller from cummins, or your bluepoint / snapon dealer. It works great and is worth the $. The first time I pulled mine I made a slide hammer type puller with a nut that would thread onto the injector and welded a rod to it with a heavy gage piece of pipe on it and then welded a large washer on the top. Still had to break them loose and wiggle a little with a wrench and a good penatrating lube before it would work. Good luck

Don;t have the time to do that. I have a canopy out of a tarp and have it apart, once I start I have to finish. I spend the last 20 minutes reading and many say this works great, why cant I get it to work?
 
Once I got the first one out the rest of them were easier. I guess I had the technique after the first one. I put the lug nut on the top and then had two small prybars on each side to pull more evenly. Good luck, you will get them, just keep working at it.
 
I think your coupling you are using is too large. Use a 3/4" rigid coupling and the lug nut shoulder rests against the coupling when you screw it on. The lug nut will thread right on the injector after you remove the nut that holds the injector on. Good Luck.
 
I made the slide-hammer tool for my first injector change-out. No way. Not enough impact. Use the threaded-rod coupler as suggested earlier, and then pry up on that with small pry-bars (also suggested earlier).

Let me apologize for the incorrect NPT size in my post. LPittsley is correct, it should be 3/4" pipe. I will correct any and all posts I have made to the 1" size.

If I understand this correctly, you threaded the nipple into the head? That's not correct. The nipple should just sit on the head around the injector. It should be just long enough to expose 3 or 4 threads of the injector that the lug nut will screw on to. Now screw on the nut. It will seat against the nipple and pull the injector loose as you continue to screw down the nut.

I always just use one of the injector hold downs and a lugnut. lay the hold down on top of another hold down and crank on the lugnut. you'll have to back out the main hold down a little as you go to get the injector all the way out.



this way you always have an injector puller without having to have yet another specialty tool
