Ever wonder why all the million-mile trucks used dino oil??

How do you like the royal purple? Is it worth the money? And how many miles should I wait to use it? I've had people tell me to run Delo for at least 10-15K befor using Purple, to give it time to seat the new engine?

You need to allow the rings to "seat" before going to a synthetic oil. This will depend on how you use the truck. If you pull hard the first several thousand miles, the rings will seat much faster than if you don't pull hard. I generally tell people to watch the oil consumption over time. IF after 6,000 miles on the oil the level does not drop much, the rings will have seated, and you can install the synthetic. Have installed synthetic oil in many of these trucks over the last 14 years, with NO problems at all!

Let me add one comment to what Wayne said. I have seen the insides of several 75k-100k engines that were getting new head gaskets and you could still see the honing marks (!).

Seeing the cross hatch honing at 75k shows how hard the steel is. Best to break it in by towing a heavy (5ton) load for 1000 miles, then sit back and smile becuase you have just STARTED breaking one of these bad boys in :D

What brand of oil

I am currently running Amsoil full synthetic 15W-40 after using Mobil 1. Got a really good price for a 30 gallon drum through a distributor in Dallas.

Been using RPM Delo since the 50's

While in IA for 20 yrs used Delvac cause Delo was a little harder to find.

Now back to Delo. .

Love em both

I have been using a brand that is made in Ok. and is called synergyn it is a full synthetic 15w50 we used it in the race cars for years with very good results. Aaron

i use rotella 15 40 cause its worked for the diesels in the past, and as far as filters i buy my fleetgaurds from cummins for about 7. 00 a peice.

My oil history:

-- Swapped factory lube for Rotella @ 1500 mi. (break in crud out)

-- Changed to Delo 400 from 5K to 12K. Didn't like smell of Rotella

-- Tried Redline 15-40 based on my good experience with their other oils. Like it a LOT, but too expensive.

-- Switched to Valvoline PB extreme. Engine didn't like it much.

-- Switched back to Delo.

-- Decided that I never want to run a 15-40 (too thick). Bought some Rotella 10w-30 (CI-4 rated).

From here on out, it's a 30W oil-- I'd buy a 0w-30 if they made one, but 5 or 10-30 is what I'm going to have to run.

I like Delo 400-- wish they made a 10-30, so I'm stuck with Rotella, Redline, or RP.

If I towed heavy or lived in a hot climate, I'd consider a 40wt again. But in my usage, it's too thick-- my average oil temp is pretty low.

EDIT: there was some M1 T&SUV in there somewhere too. .
