Changing only oil filter. But oil test will be delayed

ditched the twins, went super phat!

I just did my first oil change (3817 miles) and used Cheveron 15-40 HD Delo and a Fram oil filter.

What kind of oil and filter do you use?

TIA

Bob

Hey, it is not even a poll!

Bob... .

There have been some VERY negative posts re: using Fram oil filters. Personally, I wouldn't use them.

I use Delo 400 and think it's an excellent oil.

I use Fleetguard Stratapore oil filter LF3894, and get them at Cummins NW in Portland. Pay $8. 54 888. 289. 0990

If you choose Fleetguard, get the FS19579 fuel filter from them. $12. 94 each.

Good luck

I had been using Fleetguard Stratapore filters and Rotella 15W-40. I have since switched to Amsoil Synthetic 5W-30 and the Amsoil dual remote bypass.

It is STRONGLY reccomended that you DO NOT use Fram filters. There have numerous posts on here about severe engine damage caused by them. Personally, i would get that filter off your engine as soon as possible. I recently talked to my dealer and they even said the Fram should not be used on the Cummins. If that filter causes damage to your engine, you will mosty likley NOT be covered under warranty.

Get yourself a Fleetguard, Fleetguard Stratopore, or Mopar filter ASAP. That is a very expensive engine to take a chance with. Dont take my word for it, check the other posts.

Filter!!!

Gotta chime in here with the others with a caution about the Fram filter. For the money it would be wise to get either the Mopar filter or order a case of Fleetguard filters from Geno's. This way there can never be a doubt in your mind that you got the best available... ... ... ... Pete

Rottela T and Fleetguard micro glass from Geno's. I only use Amsoil in the rears and transmission. Why? Because I buy my trucks to use and usually would dump a gasser at 100k. I figure 200k on this one and oil use should still be minimal. I don't figure it will be worth anymore regardless of what brand of oil I use.

The way warranty laws are written if any engine manufacture says a certain brand filter is required to stay in warranty they must supply the filter free of charge. I don't see Cummins handing out Fleetgaurd filters so that must mean you can use any type you please and stay in warranty. I personally use Wix filters and Delo, but would never touch a Fram, they're known to fail. Even if warranty covers it who wants the headache?

I use mopar or fleetgaurd filters only. For the most part I have been useing Lubrication Engineers 15/40. When I get my free oil change from my dealer I pay an xtra 12 $'s and get Valvoline Premium Blue. I will be switching to Delo 400 15/40. I think it is a great oil and I can afford it. Don't forget to get the factory garbage out of your pumpkins, they will rot if you don't.

Fleetguard Stratapore and Rotella 15-40.

Geno's has the 4/2/1 package that gets everything to you except the oil in one box and is a nice match to the change interval schedule. They had 2 semis back up to the bay door with all of the 4/2/1 kits that comprised the minimum order for Fleetguard to make up a new part number, it was made especially for this packaging for Geno's Garage. The kits were stacked so tall Robin couldn't pull them from the top of the stacks.

For my last oil change, I used a Napa Gold oil filter with Rotella 15w-40 oil. Has anyone used this filter? What I really want to know, is it a good filter? Any info would be helpful. Thanks.

Napa uses Wix filters. They are a good filter, i have used them for a long time on our Detroit Diesels. For the Cummins Ram i would use the Stratapore since it is a heavier duty design.

Personally, I use Fleetguard & Delo in the Cummins. The oil comes from Wal-Mart and the filter from Cummins. This past winter I switched to Cenex Superlube 10w-30 as it will pour at 0°F and the Delo will not. I will permanently changeover to Synthetic before winter.

I work at an OEM and we put Cenex 15w-40 oil in the Detroit & Cummins Diesels. The customers are free to use their favorite brand as long as it meets Cummins & Detroit spec's. That pretty much means any 15W-40 oil that is API CH-4 or equivalent.

We also us Cummins & Detroit CNG fueled engines and the oil for these beasts is much different than diesel fueled units. For those we have to use a extremely low ash & high phosphorous oil. For them we use Mobil Delvac GEO.

I use<em>d</em> conventional Mobil in the wife's Caravan, <strike>at least</strike> until <strike>the next change</strike><em>today</em>. I just bought Mobil 1 Synthetic for a permanent changeover. I prefer Purolator filters for the van, but will <em>no longer</em>use <strike>premium</strike><b>ANY</b> Fram<strike>, too</strike>. The premium filter is a pretty well built, for a Fram,<em> or so I thought. I cut open the filter can today. The bypass valve & screen is great, the can is heavy enough, the anti backflow valve is good, but it still has the same CARDBOARD end caps on the filter media. I wonder why Fram added a nice bypass filter screen?</em>

I like to add $. 02 on the topic of filters here.

If I didn't run then Fleetguard, I'd probably run the Amsoil filter.

brobeson:

I do alot of business with "Scheid Diesel" in Indiana.

I recently returned from their shop in Lafayette, Indiana

after having some more work done to my truck.

While there, they showed me a 24 valve engine block

out of a 2001 Dodge CTD. The #6 piston/rings had

failed and they believe it was due to a "Fram" filter

which the owner had installed.

I am not trying to scare you, but as the other members

said, I would stick with the Fleetguard or Mopar oil

filters!
