What brand Oil and Filter do you use?

Fleetguard 3894 and amsoil. Just changed to amsoil.

I too would not touch a Fram, the way I understand it they used to be good filters years ago and then went cheap.

I always prefer using a Pennsylvania Crude Oil based motor oil, but since Pennzoil closed down their Oil City, Pa refinery last year it is hard to get a Pa-based oil. Valvolene is still Appalachian based as well as Penn-Brad at the old Kendall refinery in Bradford, Pa. But I've never used their's yet and don't know if I want to start in my Cummins. So, for now I am using Rotella 15W-40. I've used Pennzoil, Texaco Ursa, Kendall, Amalie, and Delo with success in diesels - all in either 15W-40 or 30 weight.

Hate to break this to ya, but Pennzoil has not been Pa Crude for YEARS.

Same old Texas/rot gut Arab crap everybody was using.



Your right about Kendall, they sold their name, and Pitt-Penn is using their old plant. Do we trust it is Pa crude? I don't know.

15-40 rottela t . I have been taking my truck to a quaker state fast lube place for years and have had good luck with them. Have gotten to know the guys and they seem to know what they're doing. My question, is the quaker state oil filter they put on any good? who makes the filter? Thanks, Don

I use Delo 400 15-40 and the Fleetguard Stratapore oil filter LF3894 every 4,000 miles.

Hate to break this to ya, but Pennzoil has not been Pa Crude for YEARS.

The can has not said Pa Crude for years, but the Oil City (Rouseville) refinery ran Pa crude. Lots of my friends with wells lost their buyer when that refinery turned to making wax.



Penn-Brad claims they run only 100% Pa grade crude oil.

Quaker State filters are really repackaged/recanned Purloator filters. I don't think this is a bad choice of filter, but there are certainly a few others that are better. I recommend you bring your own filter to them. Fleetguard or Amsoil are my top two choices.

Until becoming a TDR member I used Fram also. Now I don't, not worth the risk. Do a search here on the TDR and you can find the lab results of almost all oil filters out there on the market. I personally use a WIX oil filter and Royal Purple synthetic oil.

Will somebody please clarify:



Which is the best filter for the 12-valve motor, LF 3552 Microglass or LF 3894 Stratapore? I thought I read in the TDR awhile back that the Stratapore was only for 24-valve and Microglass for 12s, but I noticed Hemidart uses Stratapore in his '95 (12).

The Fleetguard Stratapore LF-3894 is for the 24 Valve engine. It has a stronger/heavier threaded nut assembly, thicker rubber gasket and heavier filter shell. They made this filter to address the oil pressure spikes in cold temps on the 24 Valve engine.



The (Stratapore) LF-3894 & (Microglass) LF-3552 are interchangeable. In a nutshell, the Startapore media filters the oil even BETTER than the Microglass media. This is the reason I use the LF-3894.

Another Filter upgrade you should look at is the Fleetguard fuel filter FS-19519 in place of the FS-1253 fuel filter. Its a tight fit, but it works. Its a larger filter and uses the Stratapore filtering media too. A much better fuel filter than the FS-1253 Cellulose (paper) filter. You can find them @ Geno's too. It may go on easy, or it can be a *****.
