i have changed my coolant to shell long life . its approved for all diesels including cummins. its recommended change is one million miles. they say to add shell addative at half million miles . i will be changing mine at 250000miles . my 2 cents.
I don't know what the factory fill is but 50,000 miles and 1. 5 years is too long for it. Mine was starting to look bad and stuff was settling out when I changed it the other day.
Not sure what the factory fill is would like to know as well. I need to add a little to the over flow bottle not sure what to add, As well when time to change coolant over to new.
The Dodge factory fill is a low-silicate ethylene glycol. As my truck is too new for a system changeout, I purchased a gallon of this coolant for top-up use from Cummins Southern Plains this week while I was buying some other stuff. The stuff they sell is made by Pyroil, a division of Valvoline.
Although propylene glycol coolant has some advantages over ethylene glycol (supposed longer life, reduced toxicity, etc. ), it also has a lower specific heat than ethylene glycol - that means less heat transferred per pound of coolant. The Cummins guys said that the Dodge version of the ISB was engineered to run on low-silicate ethylene glycol, and there's really no need to change over to propylene glycol unless someone just wants to. So, ya pays yore money and ya takes yore choice.
