little "OL" lady

now thats precious-- little "OL" lady,--- YAA rite,- i have a neighbor that drives that same way every time he goes by, just so i can hear his straight piped 02 dodge and he is a paraplegic, with his wheel chair in the back. plus he is a heavy duty mechanic. got to hand it to him.

i hate to burst anyones bubble but that KBB and nadaguides website is a real crock. Those numbers are all ficticious. I guess i'm lucky and can buy my vehicles at dealer auctions and save many thousands but i also see what goes on there. The money they make off vehicles is really sick.

22,000 for an '01 with 55k is pretty good. When 03's with 10k on them sell for 28k. When new vehciles hit the market they pummel the used truck value. My 02 depreciated 10 grand last year off "sticker price" Luckily i bought it cheap and now i only owe a few thousand less than what it is truelly worth.

Worth is another arguable word. Your truck is worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it. If you can get someone to pay 28k, then its worth that... to them. But there is no way you will ever get a dealer to give you that. Try and sell it yourself for a while, you'll be able to get more for it if you can find a buyer. When speaking with a dealer just know that they are taking thousands from you and except it, if you can get past that then your home free.

Having what you want can sometimes suck, because you have to pay for what you really want.

You sound like a man of great experience. The only other thing I have found that works well when looking for a good deal is to be married to a women that is tired of you trading cars/trucks and puts unrealistic constraints on your deal making to the point that the only way you can get a deal done is by picking away at the dealers until you catch them asleep at the switch. this has happened to me twice in the last 5 years. It's feels kinda like connecting with the sweet part of the bat with a fast ball and then watching it go out of the park :D Both times I got more for the truck I traded than I paid for them. ;)

I called the Stealer today and they said I can order a new truck in June and they will give me 26,500 towards my trade. I will get the truck for Cost! Then they will add on the $2000 that I owe extra, witch will counteract the Cash Back Bonus. They said put some money down and I am in like Flynn..... I will also be able to sell all of my Hot rod Bombs and make a down payment.

I would respectfully request you avoid the generic reference, "stealer. " Please feel free to post experiences - good or bad - in detail.

Thank you.

rhickman, you sure hit the nail on the head. From 1st hand experience selling advertising mediums to car dealerships and knowing to be succesful at this you have to know the car biz inside and out this is the game. While the KBB and NADA were designed to be indexes for used car pricing that is exactly what they are... ..... indexes. Dealerships love trade ins as typically they can profit much more as compared to buying cars wholesale or visiting the auction. Think of this situation fromt the car dealers perspective, the market will bear say $20000 (using all hypothetical numbers here) for your used car, realizing the national average Gross profit per car is $1,500 (and believe me that is very conservative) They are likely to offer no more than $14000 for the unit as they have typically $300 in a car to get it detailed and ready to sit on the lot, thats not counting if it needs work like new tires etc. so that it can pass safety inspections. So in essence, the dealership takes on a major financial risk when picking up a trade-in. Now think back from the used car consumers mind now, with all the tools of the web etc, the used car buyer is typically more informed of market conditions than a new car buyer as they have little to fall back on when making a buying decision (warranty) The typically used car buyer will shop 4-5 weeks via focused advertising mediums before even calling or visiting a dealership, if the dealership is not pricing their cars by MARKET CONDITIONS and by the old standard cost plus method of markup why would the consumer shop this dealership over a more competitive priced dealership advertising the same vehicle for less using standard market conditions to buy a vehicle. If 2 dealerships side by side advertise near or same units but one is pricing their unit higher, they better have one heckuva case displayed in their advertisement as to why that unit is worth more than his neighbors priced less. Building a case of value in the consumers mind via cost extra money and eats away at profitability for the dealership, and takes a very talented Advertising Account Executive to help produce leads for. My whole point to the post here is regardless of how sweet any vehicle is or house or whatever for that matter, it is only as valuable as what the market will bear/consumer perceived value. Having many good business and personal friends in the car biz, they will all tell you on a personal level that you almost always are better selling your vehicle outright. A savvy and successful dealership will always try to steal the car on trade-in. Its the only way a franchise or independent dealership can stay as profitable as they do.

another key word that jrandol used, MARKET CONDITIONS. Market reports get released every week and they change. Keep up to date on these conditions. Know what is selling and what isn't. Right now those little diesel bugs are hotcakes. A couple weeks ago i had to buy my wife a new (ok used replacement) vehicle. I ended up getting a van, but they had some 2002 taurus's and sables going for dirt cheap. Ford Credit had about 100 vehicles to run through and they were selling anywhere from 2-3k off market value. I watched a HO taurus with 12k on it roll through for like 8500.

picked up a 2000 SEL Limited Windstar minivan for 12k only had 40k miles on it too. The little tv and vcr is good for the kids, keeps em quiet.

My wifes brother is going down to order a 04 dodge CTD in a few months, he better get prepared to shell out.

To all of you sceptics,

It seems the mighty Cummins is worth more than the Stealer sells buys them back for. I deposited a check for close to $30,000 today. As soon as the 04's are ready to order, ME FIRST

haven't we discussed the "worth" issue? Yeah ok, dealers stay in business by making 10 dollars off every vehicle they sell...
