I just scrapped my airbox and installed the K&N re-0880. What do ya'll oil your foam pre filters with. When I used to desert race quads, I would spray my pre filters with WD-40. Is this acceptable for the Ram, or is there something better? Thanks for any help.

I don't know if it's better or not,but I bought a can of K&N's spray oil, which is a lot thicker and tackier than WD-40.

I may be wrong but I always thought the prefilter was made for NO oil,it's mainly there to take out the big stuff and protect the 0880.

It said on the package to oil the pre filter. Only problem is of course K&N wants you to use their special oil for the pre filter and I couldnt find it anywhere in Vegas. I got some foam filter oil from a motorcycle store but I think that is for the foam like a sponge not the coarse foam as on the pre filter. Any more suggestions are appreciated!

Snyder, I just installed the RE-0880 and pre-filter on my truck about 3 weeks ago. The directions I got (bought mine from Summit Racing) also said to pre-oil before installation, but I had thought it meant the main filter element. Since this was my first ever K&N, I went to Kragens and got the K&N recharge kit for $10. I posted this same question here and most everyone told me the K&N comes oiled from the factory, and I didn't need to oil it up myself before installation. I personally didn't oil the pre-filter at all.

I believe you can online order the K&N recharge kit from Geno's Garage or Jannetty's.

Hope this helps.

Tom

The recharge kit is for the gauze filter, the 0880. Your package should have said "pre oiled from factory, ready to install. " The foam, 25-0880, should read "K&N air force pre-cleaner must be treated with foam filter oil before use-NEVER RUN DRY!" Thats what it says on my package. I just wondered if the foam filter oil I got from Yamaha was the right stuff?!Any help please!

Snyder,

I used the K&N spray oil on my pre-filter. I applied a 'lite' coat to the inside and outside before installing it over the RE-0880 filter. I think most any oil designed for foam filters would work, might be harded to clean though.

Motorcycle foam filter oil is the correct stuff to use on your foam pre-cleaner. Its thick and sticky, and will stay in place. If you use light oil or motor oil, it will tend to slowly run to the bottom (or lowest point) of the filter, thereby reducing its effectivness over time.
Here is trick we use on offroad motorcycles, when reoiling a foam filter. After you have cleaned the filter, place it in a large plastic ziplock bag, pour in a bit of filter oil, zip it closed with most of the air squezed out, then kneed or squeeze the bag to evenly coat the filter. You don't need to over do the oil, a thin thorough coating is all thats required. After you've coated the filter, remove it from the ziplock and save the bag with the oil for next time. Its a much neater and less messy way to get a properly oiled foam filter.
