I just used my last pail of Chevron Delo 400 15w-40 CI-4+ ! Now what oil do I use for my next oil change?

Does any oil company still sell a CI oil ? Thanks

I get Lucas CI-4 through summit racing. I think Amsoil has one too. I'm sure there are others, shouldn't be hard to find.

I use the Amsoil HD Diesel and Marine Oil on my 06.

According to the Amsoil site:
Engineered for pre-2007 diesel engines in on-road applications as well as all model year diesel engines in off-road applications. High 12 TBN controls acids from combustion blow-by and EGR. Additives control soot thickening, oxidation and wear. Extended drain capabilities reduce downtime and motor oil expenses.
  • SAE 15W-40
  • API CI-4+/CI-4/CH-4/CF/CF-2/SL/SJ

I'm ashamed to admit it, but I'm running off the shelf Mobil Delvac in CK-4 or whatever the new variety is now. I've decided that the CK or CI concern is far down on my list of worries with this truck at this point.

I used Amsoil AME in my 05, which is still available as indicated above, but I did switch to CK-4 15w-40 DME.

Unlike CJ oil, CK oil is supposed to be better than CI oil. The Amsoil DME has better additive, and operating properties than the AME which is why I switched.

I don’t have the option for CI in my ‘18, but I have no issues running a CK oil in it. I’ll also be running DME in it.

The C stands for compression ignition, the I is the generation of oil. All the new standards are supposed to be backwards compatible with older engines. So an engine that specifies ci-4 can run cj or ck oil.

Here is a link to the api website that explains there classifications.

https://www.api.org/products-and-se...ations/oil-categories#tab-diesel-c-categories

They are technically backwards compatible but CJ oil was not a better oil than CI, which is why many people still choose to run CI oil.

Luckily CK oil is much better. Every oil company I’ve talked with was quite happy when CK came out as they all wanted to drop the CJ spec.

I would guess CK will be the end of CI oil. There’s only a handful of them left, and it’s not worth the separate line anymore. My 0.02.

What’s important aside from the API rating is the Cummins rating of CES20081, which I believe is equivelant to CJ-4, not CK.
Its on the shelf at Walmart, and it wasn’t expensive.

That brings up another point. I was reading a Cummins Bulletin on engine oil for pre-DPF ISB’s and it stated that CK and CI oils were recommended, but CJ was only permitted. There was even a blurb stating that CK should be used anywhere CJ was originally spec’d

So it also appears that Cummins doesn’t like the CJ oil spec.

CES 20086 = CK
CES 20081 = CJ
CES 20078 = CI

Rotella exclusively from the first oil change. There are only 3 times a different oil has been in my truck. The first is the oil that was in the truck when I bought it. The second was when a Dodge dealer changed the oil by mistake when they were supposed to be doing something else. Not sure what they used. The only reason I knew they did it was because there was a Mopar oil filter on the truck, and I only use Fleetguard. The third was when the injectors were changed by the local Cummins Southern Plains shop. An solenoid O-ring failed and put diesel in the crankcase. The Cummins shop used Valvoline Premium Blue. Needless to say, I loves me some Rotella...

I never use that "high mileage" stuff in my engines because as I understand, it contains additives which cause the seals to swell which helps prevent leaking. Trouble is that it causes the seals to wear more rapidly and will allow easier leaking if that product isnt continually used. Again...thats how I understand the high mileage oils work.

Agreed- with “S” oil, but I believe this stuff is targeted towards older pre DPF engines, and if it carries the CES rating, it’s good by me.

All CJ oil’s meet the CES rating, but it’s not great oil.

As you can see in that bulletin I posted Cummins would rather you don’t run that oil you listed. “Permitted” is their way of saying it meets the specs, but we don’t think the specs are good.
