Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) What engine will this starter fit ?

Would someone help me figure out what engine this starter would fit ?

My brother gave me 2 brand new starters that were for a Cummins with a PROPANE FUELED engine.

He said the aluminum casting was "backwards", opposite hand to our CTD engines.



Here are the statistics:

Manufactured by : Delco Remy

Series 28MT

Type 171

Volts : 12

Rotation : CW

Serial # : 00822

Made in Japan

If the Delco Tag is still on these starters (and I assume that it is from the info that you have already listed) see if there is a 7 or 8 digit part number on the tag.

The 28MT series has a lot of variations, many options. If you can find the actual part number I can pin it right down. If you cant then I can figure it out for you with a few questions so that you know what it will fit.



Finding the part number on it is the easiest way. And I'm all about easy...



If you can't find a part number than start by counting the teeth on the drive for me, it will have 9, 10 or 12 teeth. I make a mark with a sharpie or something on a tooth when I start to count them 'cause it is real easy to make a boo-boo.

I took out the starter again, to take a few photos of it. I hope I can get them posted here.
I had my Dad write down (what I thought) was all the info, but looking at the tag he forgot one very important piece of info... ... ..... the model number !
"Someone" cut out the info sticker on the outside of the box, so it's not there. However there were hand written numbers of : 392061.
Model number : 1113276
Number of teeth: 10 (counted em twice to make sure !)

How does one go about posting a photo or a couple of photos to their message.

Easiest way is get a free hosting account, photobucket is a typical one. When you upload to the hosting service you can copy a link and past it in the post. That will link to the source and show the picture.

The 1113276 is what I needed. I will find you the applications tonight when I have my laptop fired up.

You got it !
I took a look at the link you provided, and everything looks the same, except the mounting holes, 3 of them, go parallel with the rotor, not as shown as the picture in the link. They look to go 90 degrees to the rotor shaft.

Fellow told me where I should go to get a "Photobucket" account, in order to add pictures. This may take awhile, I am a machinist and mechanic, not a computer programmer !
I'll get it eventually, but maybe not right away.

BTW, what do you think this starter is worth ? It's brand new, never been used or installed.

Sorry for the delay. . weekend flew by and I am on nights this week so am out of my groove...



When you go to that Delco link the illustration is generic, you can select the other pictures there as well. It just happens the default illustration is for a pad mount model.



This was a very popular starter for Freightliner trucks, you should be able to sell the pair of them easily, just have to find someone running those trucks. Up here the major market for those trucks was home heating fuel delivery for example. My 12 month history shows 10 sales so usage is declining.



So you need to find someone running trucks that look like the picture below powered by the 6BT engine.



Now for the value...



The Reman version is currently selling for 147. 00 right now.



The new version has a sell price of $349. 00.



I would try $150. 00 to $175. 00 each, even though they are new the customer would be buying them without any warranty and can also buy a Reman for the same money.



Where the price was right whatever you can get out of them sure beats a kick in the arse with a frozen boot... ..... Oo.

No, I have not. Have been challenged at work and no time for fun... ... .



Try this link here, I have set it to your part number. Down at the bottom is applications, scroll down through it and that should give you some ideas for alternate equipment with Cummins "B" power.

Just make sure someone checks the removed starter versus yours. Trucks and equipment are still somewhat custom compared to automotive.
