I read the above mentioned study on fuel additives and have since switched to the #2 rated additive Opti-Lube and will use it for a while and see if I get improved mpg or performance. I dont have access to Bio-diesel in my area. I have a small ticking sound in my engine that seems to be prevelant in other cummins diesel engines according to what I have read from others on here. Some say 2 cycle oil has eliminated this ticking.
I am on my first tank using Opti-Lube and so far I have nothing to report good or bad.

Mph

Hello ,For a cetane boost I have been using 2 cycle walmart moter oil, about a quart per tank full, smells a little but I gain 1,2 mpg pulling my fiver. Also runs great. any coments are welcome.

update:

My truck has been running "funny" lately. When I start it @ ~14F it idles hi/low and after warm (~190f+) at lights or coming to a stop to shut down sometimes felt a slight shudder in the idle which was not normal. Nothing too bad just noticeable.

I bought a box of 60 gallon treatment through amazon.com of stanadyne performance treatment. The WEIRD thing was that I added the bottle to 30 gallons of diesel while putting in another 25 and as soon as I cranked the engine I noticed it ran quieter. The next morning and following mornings, the truck idles smooth as can be at cold start-up.

must be something there...

update part deux

I ran 3 tanks of 50gal each on Stanadyne performance. The truck is on SW9 #3 TM. Without the additive, smoke bellows from a 45mph roll-on. With it, I can't see any smoke.

Previous testing was done with the engine @ ~20k miles which may explain no MPG gain then. See previous post. Now there is a MPG gain of 1. May be other factors involved but I'm at least not going backwards.

Decided to try opti-lube and on my initial 300 miles, power seems up but smoke is only down to a "really dark haze" practically smoke if that makes any sense. Does this mean the cetane improvement may be greater in stanadyne?

I let a buddy use some in his non-turbo diesel jetta. He said he could tell no difference but I did a pre and post follow watching his tail-pipe and the difference was no smoke with the additive.

Either 10oz Amalgamated TDR-S. 12oz Power Service Diesel Kleen and 6. 5oz Amsoil Cetane Boost. Per 35 gals tank. Howes Meaner Power Cleaner is good too. It's hard to find in my area.

The above additives added before fill-up make a marked difference in throttle response, and a clean burn.

OK so let me see if I have got this right, Station A has X amount of h2o and Station B has z amount of h2o. Hmmmm... Well lets add another factor in: a specific region in the country has one maybe 2 refineries that service that region, So no matter what oil company you buy your fuel from, chances are it came from the same refinery as Station B down the street. Plus if your using a Fleetguard/Mopar filter then you are filtering and separating out what cummins/dodge did not want to go through the engine. I could see using a smaller micron filter and a separate water/fuel separator to help maybe possibly increase life of pump/injectors but things wear out and crap happens.
