Its being forced on the dealers because of COLA, in late 2013 early 2014 it was hard to find anything other than the 3:42, and the dealers replies were they could order the 4:10, that it was now available. Of coarse, was it true, don't know, salesmen!

That makes sense now, I figured they had to be some reason why they all had 3.42's. It's amazing how clueless the sales people are including the managers.

3.73 for me!

RVTRKN hit the nail on the head. COLA. It'll have to be a special order. From my search, there are nothing but 3.42 on the dealer lots in US. The 3.73 is actually standard equipment but dealers are ordering with 3.42 and paying extra for them. The government has to be an influence on this.

Looking at the dealer inventory in my area, and finding some 3.73s and a few 4.10s. Making the move from a 15K Elevation toy hauler to a 20K(rated) Cyclone 4200 toy hauler, and making the move from my 2005 2500 with 3.42 & SRW to new 3500 with DRW. Appreciate all the input in this thread. Going to grab a loaded DRW so I'm set for retirement in a few years, and the dealers are giving huge discounts for on-lot inventory.

I have a 2014 3500 DRW LONGHORN MEGA CAB SHORT BED 4.10 gear ordered Just waiting to take delivery mid July. It has all the bells and whistles. Make sure you get the 6.7L CTD w/382/850 with the AISIN 6 speed Auto if you going with the 20k toy hauler just know as I found out in IL I have to put a different plate on my truck Had B truck now I need a D it's because of the weight GVR. But you will be happier with the 3500 DRW and 4.10 gear and not looking for great MPG but PULLING POWER.

What made you swap the gears in the 05? Seems like a heavy trailer for the change.

Didn't swap gears, was available option late in the 2005 model year unless I'm mistaken. It was on the order form, 3- forty something gears. Truck is 4dr, 4wd, long bed Laramie. All Elevation toy haulers are listed as 3/4 ton towable in their literature, and I'm sure I'm close to exceeding the GVWR by a little. When I bought the truck new, I had a travel trailer. Went to a 5th wheel toy hauler and bought bigger than I anticipated. Now wanting to go bigger and to have the means to pull it effectively. I get around 11- 11.5 MPG, just returned from a 2000 mile round trip with the Can-Am RT in the back.

Wondering if I can get 11 or 12 MPG pulling 18K pounds with the powertrain as you listed? Only difference will be long bed. Thoughts?

You may be able to just remember it's all in the FOOT, also a number of things you do with your truck. You could go with the 3.73 it will probably get a little better MPGs. Buy not more power to pull mountains and big hills. That's what we pull in the winter when we go south or southwest. You have to look at what type of driving you'll be doing. So Remember, I think you're not getting this bigger truck for MPGs. It's the pulling power you will have to pull anything you want anywhere you want. By the way what state are you in

In Pennsylvania, updated my profile correctly on the second try......

With my long bed signature truck pulling a 15K fifth wheel my mileage wasn't quite that good. I had 500 miles on the truck last December when I started on a trip from MN to AZ. Winter fuel and very cold at the beginning.

I towed a little over 4000 miles and averaged 9.8 mpg based on actual gallons of fuel used for the entire trip.

On the way home with warmer weather and well broken in I did hit 11-12 from time to time. Depending on the time of year you travel I would think 10 mpg would be a reasonable expectation.

I still got about 1 mpg better than my 2005 4x4 SRW 3500 with 4:10 gears pulling the same trailer.

Well, you know what mountains are then I've always used a wing on top of my old truck. It helped with the wind and the ability to get by semis That did improve my mileage. Don't know if the wing will fit the new truck. Just don't make the mistake and get something less than what you need to pull and be safe. Because if you overwhelm your truck it won't last as long.

AFIK it wasn't an option until the MY08 trucks. 3.73 and 4.10 where the gears in 2005, backed up by all the Dodge towing guides.

I am getting up in years and am probably mistaken...
However considering how the truck pulls with the gear and power level (no change from stock) with the earlier Cummins, the 6.7 and 200 additional foot-pounds of torque should be wonderful. Probably going with the 4.10 ratio. Now, trying to find one in stock with the aisin, 4.10 and the bench (no buckets) in leather. Will find out Friday if still can be ordered.

Not sure why you would want a bench, additional seat? The Longhorn Leather bucket seats are the nicest I have ever sat in.

The Laramie is the last level that offers bench seats. The bucket seats have heated in each I'm not really into leather, but these feel real nice.
