I will be rebuilding a 96 215 horse. I am going to shoot for 400hp. What would be a good upgrade as far as pistons,rings,bearings,etc.

I cut this out of a much longer article by a fellow who really seemed to know his stuff,he was speaking of 12 valves,take it for what it's worth;

"With literally thousands of these engines in 4 & 6 cylinder configs out there we had next to zero failures. These really are a stout little engine. When they do reach the end of their life span they are totally rebuildable, Cummins supplies cylinder liners and cam bearings, you just need to have the block machined to accept them, or use oversize pistons. However, these engines are so inexpensive, most people don't rebuild them but instead buy factory remmanned or even new. This engine is not even close to being as well engineered and built as the IH 7. 3 liter, but they seem to perform very well in medium duty applications, and obviously, the Dodge truck guys love em. "

Ifflem,The guy sounds like a ford lover to me. He obviously hasn't price a new cummins lately.

Big Bob,I'll stick with my undervalved engine, and gauges. I don't care for the aluminized oil! #ad

No the guy was more into construction equipment diesels,never mentioned PSDs. Being into the big ones he probably feels our CTDs are inexpensive just because they are small.

For those who have been doing some engine swapping, where is a good place to look for a used running/rebuildable B5. 9? Approximately how much will one cost? I have seen used running engines out of Dodges listed for around $3500.

I have a Chevy that is just begging for a transplant. I almost quit driving it after getting my Dodge.
