I am looking for the best year of 2nd gen truck, I need at least a club cab with the big kids I have, (both me and the wife are 6 footers) and I know the cummins is for me.

Not to picky about 4x4 or dually, 12 or 24 valve. I know I want the manual transmission, and will try and spend less than 15 large.

what do I need to look for, problems, good things, etc. . ? I figure two wheel drive will give a bit better economy and lower the entry fee a bit, and maybe ride a little nicer.

what are your opinions and first hand knowledge?

thanks in advance,

Tim

i would go 97 12valve. bigger pump, better milage, more reliable lp pump, cheaper. ive had 2 and loved them both. i spent 125 bucks to bump it over 600lbs torque. gotta watch 5th gear nut, KDP, and the front ends on all of the second gens get loose and sloppy. ive had better luck with truck built in mexico. not sure if 53 block was an issue for 12 vavles. if you decide to go 24 id look for an 01-02. disc brakes and HO with 6spd on some. im looking for a low milage one with a stick shift. not easy to find. i did find an 02 with 52k and an auto for 16k though. full banks kit and new 35" bfg's. just know i wont be happy with an auto though.
