Fastest Car

Fastest car I ever drove was a jet black ZR-1 Corvette. It was so quick you know what was biting a hole into the seat to hold me in there. Wasn't mine though. Quickest one I owned was a 86 Corvette Coupe 4+3, tu-tone brown. I'd like to have that one back, but the wife would leave if I did. Hmm, something to ponder.

RT66DOC, good choise and good luck on the 66 Series II. That would be my pick as well. I hated the way the Brits gave in to the American market and raised the roof on the Series III cars, not to mention those UGLY bumpers on the later cars.

Sometimes, for no good reason, I go to E-Bay and check out the Jags. Some show a lot of promise, and prices don't seem to be to outrageous considering what a piece of automotive art they are.

If we really wanted one, we could always follow Peter Egans example and do total restoration of a fixer-upper in our garage. NOT.

Good Luck, Ronnie

Fastest top-end - 1970 Olds Cutlass convertible Y-74 Indy pace car. Stock select-fit hi-compression 350/turbo 350 with 2. 56 gears will run around 150 - SCARY - not too often - little brother's car

Or 1989 Jaguar XJ-6 - supposedly 155 top but I have only found enough road to hit 140 on the speedo - too much traffic around here and too many deer out in the country

Fastest street fighter - 1971 W-30 Olds - older brother's car. It was a sleeper due to no Ram Air hood, wing or stripes but it had the motor to launch into orbit with.

I have a 69 442 4-speed M-22 w/3. 90 gears that needs to have the 425 installed in it. If I can keep the bottom-end in the motor it will probably be the fastest off the line of the bunch.

Back in high school there were several GTOs, a 427 4-speed Vette, a Hemi Road Runner, and some fast Fords that we all kinda swapped around in for grins. Of course, you didn't play too hard in somebody else's ride... ... but you did get to ride when they wanted to see what it would do :D :D :D

My fastest car was a 1970 442 W-30 455 c/w 3. 91's, Hurst dual-gate, dealer installed Hurst line lock and dealer installed headers. Would get rubber shifting into drive at 105 mph with the 3. 08's that I ran for awhile. My brother claims to this day that his '68 GTO with a 427 - 450hp L-72 (from a 66 Vette), would have caught me if the race was just a little longer!

I've never had any really fast cars, but:

-68 AMX 390/4sp

-69 Olds 442 conv auto

-89 Mustang 5. 0

-95 M3

Of course, all of these would get spanked by most of the bikes I own or have owned!:D You just can't beat a motorcycle for cheap speed!

69 Dodge Dart Swinger 340 4-speed Buddy of mine had 69 Dodge Super Bee 383 4-speed with 150 on speedo. He was topped out at about 130 one night and I was several car lengths ahead my needle was pegged. Had to much beer in me one night and when I passed buddy of mine that had 69 Charger and got on it and look out. It got a way from me and slid through the ditch knocking down 23 fence posts and spun out back on the highway barely missing covert. Started it up and drove it home. Had to have the whole side redone. Pulled up along side a 69 Charger 426 Hemi once. We were side by side 1-2 and when he hit 3 all I saw was his tailights and when he shifted fire comming out of his tailpipes. Those were the days.

Fastest '60s car was my 1967 Camero 396ci/425hp. It was a 13 second 1/4 miler.
Fastest car(s) are my wifes 30A, with a 350 Latham blown small block thats an honest low 11 second car, and my '41 Pro Street Willys Coupe (no its not a jeep) with a 383 stroker motor with a 6-71 Littlefield blower that also a low 11 second street car. Both cars have a race trans built auto, the Willys with a manual shift. If I change the diff on the Willys to a 4:56 and step on the blower to 1:1 or more, I can get it into the very high 10s. Both are fun to drive.

I have never driven a real muscle car but the fastest was problably a Porsche 928. 0-80 was not that impressive but 120++ was a eye opening experience.

hot cars of the past

I was a Mopar fan in the late 60s so I drove a lot of hot Challengers and Chargers and even a Hemi Cuda until my buddy blew it up doing 70 in 2nd. However, I did drive a really fast AMX and a surprise came from a quick Rambler Scrambler. The Rambler was a real sleeper... nobody saw it comming.

1927 T Coupe with 500+ hp Pontiac. Dont know how fast as they wouldnt let it on the strip without safety equipment for Altered class cars but I beat a car that ran 127mph 1/4 mile.

Non Street legal?

"B" fuel funny car, a friend let me drive after we redid the engine and had it on the strip for tuning runs, scared the *** out of me too, I guess you hafta work into something that fast to do it justice, he asked my why I didnt get on it and I thought I did.

Late 60's or early 70's 454 Chevelle SS. Traction problems, cool.

1963 VW Bug. Honest. We bolted in a 2180cc Type I, heads ported and big valves, dual 2 bbl's (and it would drink most of the gas we fed 'er!). Right front tire off the ground 1st and second gear. Kept blowing up transmissions. Bolted that motor into a 1961 Baja with 12. 50x 15 mud tires, and still ran a 15. 5 at PMI down in Pueblo Colorado. Hard to beat in 1/8th mile, then those big V8's would eat it when you shifted into 3rd. You'd seem 'em in your rear view mirror 6 car lengths back, and they'd come by you before the 1/4 mile time hit and run high 14's/low 15's and 30mph faster!

Early 1970's or late 1960's Dodge Exterminator. Not all that fast, but cool vintage.

1970 Boss 302. 1978 or so F150 4x4, both built by the same cool guy who works for Ford in the parts dept. The F150 was a motorworks svo inspired 400M with all the right parts and throttle-body.

A few porches (carrera, 928). They are cool because the stop so well, and corner better than I'll ever drive, and they throttle steer so nice.

Lately, only my lowly '92 dodge. 650 lb/ft torque on the dyno saturday though, so it is quick in its own way.

I haven't been all the way through this thread yet, but no one is mentioning snowmobiles. Dang, those things rock. Similar to a race bike I suppose.

cool thread, lots of memories,

jon.

As a driving instructor, Ive had the opportunity to drive ALL SORTS of cool stuff over the years... from a 1600cc Porsche 356 thru full-race 850hp Porsche 935s, thru 1000hp+ street hot-rod turbo cars... now, are we talking "quick" or "fast"? hmmm... tough choice here... as for street-legal, I gotta say the fastest is either the new twin turbo 996 or the Ferarri 360 each at 200+mph. The quickest..... hmmm... . I got to drive a 1966 Ford GT40 street car once... 289 with Webers, right-hand-drive that would go from 0-100mph in something rediculous... yes, better than Viper, Corvette, or any of the old Hemi cars Ive had the good fortune to "test drive":D .

I don't compare to most but...........

Had a 79 Ford Mustang w/ auto and 2. 3L 4 banger... ... ... dropped a built 289 and 5 speed into it. The 289 was built by a close friend that was building nascar engines for a while. Anyway it ran a 13. 1 in the quarter with 2. 73 and welded spider gears. It had a 140 MPH speedo in it where 140 was about 4 o-clock with a trip reset button at 6 o-clock. Anyway I had it pinned against the trip reset knob with the valves floating at around 7300 rpms on I-5 by Federal Way. (155+) Got really scary so I backed out. But as far as sheer excelleration was the same car with a new 8. 8 posi with 3. 73's. Would have loved to seen what the quarter times were with the new rear end considering that the car only wieghed about 2700 lbs. Couldn't keep traction for the life of me and that was with 295-50r 16 tires.

P. S. I kept the motor and am waiting to get a new mustang to drop it in.

I fastest car I ever drove? Well, I thought that it was my friend's 1969 AMX. That was back in,,, you quested it, 1969. Now this same friend has a 1985 Porsch 911 Carrera. Talk about fast!

I think the fastest car I've ever driven has to be my 71 Buick GS455 Stage 1. The speedo tops out at 120 but I think I had once over 130 at least. The fastest I've ever been has to be 175 in a 1998 Mitsubishi Eclipse that belongs to a friend of mine. His car is an accurate replica of the Mitsu off the Fast and Furious and despite the fact that it grinds rice its one heck of a fast car.  Oo.

Joe

that 230 is KPH though... lol . . 140 mph or so. . on the local toll road [man i was stupid for doing that... ]. that was pretty fast... that little rice burner was screaming
