I was about to order a Power Edge EZ but stopped when I ran across this recent thread:

https://www.turbodieselregister.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=28525&highlight=power+edge

The following is a direct quote from the EZ site:

"The Power Edge EZ will also allow maximum fueling at full turbo boost. The Power Edge EZ provides an additional 65 rear wheel horsepower. "

I have a 2001 5sp ETC and don't want to spend $500+- for a box that only gets 10+- HP gain at the rear wheels when they are advertising 65HP gain...

For the guys that have the manual transmissions, we recommend the Edge Comp box, which incorporates a fuel dump along with the timing advance. It's available from www.bd-power.com, and I am an installing dealer.

Thanks for the info, but a lot of us with newer trucks don't want to add something right now that will probably void the warranty. Also don't want so much HP that I have to replace the clutch. Just want a product that does what it says it will do... :(

I've been running around with over 400 hp since the truck was 3000 miles old, now it's almost 90,000 miles old. The truck's never been back to the dealer yet, so I don't worry about warranty, and what D/C doesn't know won't hurt them. If you worry about the clutch slipping, then worry about it even by leaving the truck stock. Many of my customers end up with a clutch slippage by the time the truck hits 10,000 miles, and most of them just come to me for oil changes. Not everyone wants a rocket.

I appreciate your input, but it doesn't answer my question... I realize there are other power boxes out there. I also realize that a lot of TDR BOMBERS don't care about the warranty issue. BUT, for those of us who do, and are just looking for some HP increase for towing (not interested in how fast I can get off the line), we just want to know if this EZ does what it says it will do...

EZ

Rick, I can't speak for everybody but I have the auto trans. and I got about 50 RWHP according to the dyno. I have two friends that have the EZ and love it. I'm like you I want a little more power but don't want to lose my warranty for what its worth. Hopes this helps.

Rick, Call the boys at EDGE products, real nice guys, They let me use mine to tow my trailer to LasVegas to try before I paid them. That trip convenced me, not only did I have a lot more power but got better mpg too. Not affliated with Edge prod.

I just put an EZ on our 2001 HO 6 speed. We tow a cattle trailer every week that weighs in between 15 and 20K, depending on the size of the cows were haulin. There is one long, steep grade that we have to pull. Before I put on the EZ we always had to shift down into 5th. :( But since we installed the EZ I can pull it in 6th with no problemo, even have to let off it. This thing will fly up any hill with a load now. The gains are unreal for a $500 upgrade. The truck never had much power till around 2100 RPM, now I can feel it start pullin from around 1600 right thru about 2400. Really widens out the power band. :D

Hope this helps

Doug

With the EZ my truck will pull hills in 6th that I was in 4th before. The engine seems to run smoother at both idle and at speed. The truck just wants to pull from 1700 to 2600. Passing is no longer down shift and go, just pedal down and gone. In 35 years of bombing everything I have owned, the EZ was the best return per Dollar ever. I got mine from desertdieselparts.com

Thanks for the info... That's what I'm looking for... Is there any non HO 5 speeds (ETC) out there with similar info? I may give Edge a call tomorrow and discuss it with them... Still seems like none of you are getting the full 65HP at the rear wheels, like they advertise, though... :(

Rick, the 65HP they are claiming is at about 2000 RPM, not peak HP. In peak HP most guys are seeing 30-40 HP gains. The box does what they say it does when looked at in the same context they are describing it. I don't drive mine at 2700 RPM, so the peak gain is not important to me. The power in the midrange is great with an EZ, and that is where we need the power anyway. Hope this helps clear the air a little.

It's As Advertised !

Rick,

Pop one on and try it. You will see an unbelievable increase in Power and Torque. It does what it says. ;) ;) ;)

Rick, Sorry can't tell you about ETC result as I to have an ETH. I can say that I love my EZ BUT if I was buying now I would definitely getthe COMP. For the difference in price you get control in the cab. You do not have to tap the fuel pump wire and it will work just as an EZ. Plus later you will have the ability to hook up the fuel side when you are ready. I just see no bonus to buying an EZ over a COMP at this point.

Ted

I agree with Ted Constantine, I have the DD ultimate Feul module, which is a COMP. It's a blast, The only thing I slip is my rear tires. :D :D :D Ken

Thanks for the input...

I appreciate all the good advice. For those of you with the Comp box, I appreciate the fact that you have more HP available to you, but, you may not believe it, there are a few of us out here that just want modest HP gains while towing, and have no interest in smoking tires or beating a Ford PS off the line. I really don't want a cab selectable setting. For those that do, the Comp makes more sense. BTW, Piers has the EZ on sale for about a $100 less than the comp and that's the other reason I'm looking at it... ;) Thanks again for the info...

Rick, like you, I am more interested in towing and really could care less about "off the line". Grin, that is not meant as an insult to anyone... please don't anyone take it that way.

Prior to EZ, while towing my Jeep and trailer I would have to get out of OD about midway up steep hills. After EZ, no problem with plenty of pedal to spare. Its great to actually be able to accelerate going UP hills. :D We plan to eventually get a TT and I am trying to get things set ahead of time. I'm happier than the proverbial pig in xxxx with the EZ.

I have an ETC with auto and recently installled the EZ. I was holding off because I really didn't "need" more power but the bug got the best of me and I finally broke down. Wanted to be able to pull a trailer up the mountain passes a little easier (mainly wanted the boost module in it so I could get more boost on those long steep climbs for lower egts). At least thats how I ended up rationalizing it for myself. Literally took two minutes to install. Did not break any void stickers. WOW what a difference. Been bombing vehicles for 25 years and I would have to say that for the money this is the best bang for the buck I have ever done. The low mid range on up is noticably better

It works just fine. Why fret about buying it? If for some reason you don't like it, simply return it. Edge has a 60 day Satisfaction Garenteed policy... ..... chances are you won't be sending it back tho.

99 5Spd Non-HO

Rick,

I put an EZ on my '99 Non-HO 5Spd. I absolutely love the thing. I can't imagine my pickup without it. I didn't have any gauges on mine before the box, but my current max EGT es about 1050 peak and get about 27 - 30# of boost from a stock turbo with the EZ elbow on it. Based on some threads that are floating around, that's about 200 degree decrease in EGT and about 10# up on the boost. I leave it on setting #3 all of the time. Didn't see any increase in mileage but the increase in towing power with my trailer (see signature) is truly amazing. It's also amazing how "driveable" it is.

I've never had mine on a dyno, but I dusted a buddy of mine who has a stock (except for BHAF) 01 HO 6Spd during a 60 mph roll-on. He couldn't believe the difference in the performance. Drop me a PM or e-mail if you want any more unpaid testamonial:D
