EZE on a 01 5spd

Rick, give me a call on monday. I'll send you one down, if you like it... keep it, if not just send it back for a full, no questions asked, refund.

Okay, I would ask why, but just because I gotta know why:)

Idaho Native's Victim

If you'll scroll up a few posts, you'll see Idaho Native's post about dusting a buddy with the ETH/DEE. Well, that was me! We were heading home after a night flight (USAF), and he pulled up next to me at a light. All I saw was the green light and then his tail lights. Following that we went on to US 75, almost an interstate. We pulled even at about 55 mph, I signaled and nailed it, and got the jump as I called the start in essence. Well, I got a half truck length, and that was all. Soon got reeled in. We quit at about 80 mph. Don't need much more proof in my book that the EZ works!

Well Rick....

It looks like it's time to buy yourself that early Christmas present! :D You can't go wrong with Piers' offer... . I know you'll be happy with it. ;)

EZ Edge

I have a 98. 5 24V 5 speed, and tow a 12,000 lb boat trailer that really churns up the air and makes the Cummins work. Most towing is across mountains at 4,000 to 8,000 feet altitude.

Like RJOL, I wanted a modest increase in power with minimal risk. The EZ box really does the job - more power increase than I expected, little if any decrease in fuel mileage. Makes those long boat tows between Utah and the PNW so much easier, and makes pulling my small travel trailer a breeze. Really fun when not towing.

I keep mine on the middle setting, so I waste less fuel and produce less smoke at lower RPM.

Our primary use for our 3500 is towing our 5th wheel, not having the fastest diesel on the block, and our mods have been incorporated accordingly. Having said that, the Edge EZ has really transformed our truck into a "towing fool"! :D

Stock, probably due to emissions concerns, our ETH didn't really "pull" until about 2100 RPM. With the EZ, it pulls right now whenever you hit the loud pedal.

By advancing injection timing (and in conjunction with the boost elbow, BHAF and 4" exhaust), maximum EGT's have dropped from 1250 degF to 1050 degF when towing. Maximum boost is up from 22 PSIG to 31 PSIG.

Hills in the Texas Hill Country that required full throttle in 5th gear when stock are now taken at 1/2-2/3 throttle in 6th gear. Mid-range pulling power is much improved. :D

The only downside - we're still running the EZ in setting #3, and the truck is smokier than stock when towing. We get a healthy puff on every shift when accelerating, and I'm seeing a little bit of black film on the 5ver after 250 miles on the road.

Net-net, the Edge EZ is probably right up there with the Jacobs e-brake as the best investment we've made for towing. You really won't believe the difference it makes in the truck's performance.

Thanks for all the replies...

Decided to take Piers up on his offer (by the way, he has a great price on EZ's and Comps right now). Your inputs have convinced me that this box will help in the towing department... I'll post again after trying it out later this week... :D

Like others have said, it really helps the lower end, as it is tricking the injection pump into thinking there is full boost, and also by altering the timing.

However, starting at about 2100 and on up, the power added by the EZ vs. the stock map steadily decreases. This is where the bigger injectors really help. My next bomb come Jan. :D :D

Kev-

If you want to try an EZ out, then you can come up to Fort Collins and drive my 98 24V with the EZ. Let me know if you are interested.

Installed the EZ this week and it does produce a noticable power increase. My pre install boost pegged out at 18psi. Post install the boost gets up to about 26psi with the EZ elbow installed. Thought that might be a little low, but talked with Edge and they say my readings are normal for my setup (2001 5sp non HO, stock engine/injectors, sea level. I'd like to try this with my 5th wheel, but it is winterized until March or April. I've got it set at level 3, but may move it back to 2, as I've read some threads saying that the level 2 will do a little better on mileage... :)
