The last sample I took on my signature truck showed a soot level of 1/10 of 1% after 356 hours on the oil. The previous sample had the same result with 304 hours.

Why the extra filter the one on the truck does a good job?

OEM filter is 35um absolute, upgraded OEM is 25 absolute, Amsoil/Donaldson is 15um absolute. A bypass will get your oil clean down to 2um absolute. Most wear is from particles in the 5-7um range.

Change the oil more often and you won't need a by-pass filter. Just more lines and fitting to leak if you ask me! I have been doing oil sample yearly thru blackstone since truck was new. Change the oil & filter and fuel filter every 5,000 miles, and I now have over 135K on the truck now and the oil samples come back with no problems, all normal!

I've gone as far as 155,000 miles with only ONE OIL DRAIN in that 155,000 mile 9 year period! NO oil leaks ever, and certainly much less costs involved, as well as dumping 31 oil changes each change at 5,000 mile intervals. 3 GALLONS X 31 = 93 GALLONS dumped!

Plus a good By-Pass system will give you much better wear! PROVEN many times over.

Up until a year ago I wasn't paying for oil changes so the cost had no effect on me. This year I got a deal thru my Dodge dealer, 4 oil changes, with filter for $120! So again, I am not bothered by the cost. I just can't get past not draining the oil, and just putting new filter in every so many miles. Plus I know that Amsoil says that it doesn't effect the warranty, but tell that to the Service Manager at the dealers, they aren't buying it. Hell, I got told about the AFE air filter. I think I will stick to my old ways of doing things. I got no leaks and below average wear on the engine!

Lots of people doing just what your doing. On the flip side I can't bring myself to run cheap oil/filters when it's not that much more for high quality parts.

Thinking of cheap oil. I asked the guys at Blackstone Labs (get oil samples done by them) what oil they use. Believe it our not they said most of them buy the Wal-Mart brand. They claim that the tests they have run showed that the oil from Wal-Mart was doing as good a job as the best out there. . go fiqure! I have thought of that when I go to buy oil for my Chevy Tracker, but I just can't bring myself to do it. I am running Mobil 1 and going 5,000 miles between changes, oil samples come back great! The truck as I mentioned gets oil changes at the dealer. Why not for $120 for 4 oil changes!

Are you in the Army? When I worked for DCMA, I worked on the AH64 program. The company I was assigned to built the throttle controls and some other related parts. A grea looking aircraft, but is it easy to work on?

Yes I am, well actually the ID Nat'l Guard. It's not too bad to work on, some things are a PITA, but pretty easy for the most part. Troubleshooting takes the most time, but it's pretty fun doing the test flights.

I worked for the New Jersey ANG and the California ANG from 1973-1989. Over the years I worked on the F-105, T-33, 0-2 and F-4C, D, E. Switched to Defense Contracts Management Agency (DCMA) because I wanted a GS grade before I retired from Civil Service. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

i got a kit from Oil Charge Systems -  ALL KITS LIFETIME GUARANTEE / FREE SHIPPING USPS (USA) Don't change your oil as often keep it clean, with EGR valves on diesels it only makes sense.   Keep the soot out of the oil with these simple to install kits, (takes ten and it uses a bracket that mounts the amsoil bypass filter to the engine... . why couldn't you mount the filter to the engine??? the regular filter is mounted to the engine...

http://www.amsoil.com/bypassfilters/instructions/BMK21_BP83.pdf

this does state not to mount it on engine, but is that so idiots don't drill into the block? or their mount or filter can't handle vibrations? the kit i'm running is using th amsoil 100 filter so i'm concerned about this?

Many mount their bypass filter to the engine. Amsoil says "don't". That's why I asked about the unusual bracket in the first place.

As I look at it more closely, I believe the bracket is there to guide the front clip/body assy. during marriage to the frame.

Hmmm... :-{}
