What kind of fuel milage?

The wife and I were talking the other day on the way into town and she told me that she would like it if I would get a newer truck with a trailer. So the question is is what kind of milage are you 3rd gen folks getting with your trucks? A guy at work has a 03 and is pleased as punch at getting 17. When I get 17 with my truck I'm PO'ed. Anywise, any and all information is greatly appreciated.

My '03 350+ hp. HO 6spd w/4. 10's and 35" tires gets 16-17mpg around town(short tirps) Longer trips between 45-60 I have gotten 20 (according to the trip comp). If I go 65+ it drops back to 14-15 mpg. towing I get between 9-11. 5mpg. you have to understand that the newer trucks are heavier and more powerful so their mileage will be lower.

Have an 05 3500 w/ 3:73's and AT. Driving pretty easy (55-65 mph) getting 18-20mpg on open road, with a couple less mixed with city driving.

Son has an '04. 5 2500 and he does ~1-1. 5 less with simular driving.

No towing numbers yet. Expect 12-14 with a 5-6000 lb trailer at 60mph.

Both trucks have less than 3000 miles on them so milage could improve a tad once they are broke in a little more.

Compared to a gas truck these numbers are great... ... ... .

Just got back from vacation last week. Had a mixture of travelling long distance and short runs during the whole week, but most of it was highway. The terrain was a mixture of flat mountain. We were not hauling a trailer but did have the bed loaded with luggage, coolers and assorted beach gear, plus 4 people in the cab (between my step-son & myself we total almost 500 lbs). I averaged 17. 3 mpg for the whole trip, this is all hand calc'd. Speeds ranged from 55-70mph depending on speed limit, most of the time I was running around 60-65mph and seeing around 1900-2000rpm.



The rig only has 3600 miles on it right now, and I am hoping to see a little improvement in mpg once the engine is broke in. I am very happy with mpg I am seeing right now, considering on this same trip I would only avg 15-16 with my old '02 1500 5. 9L gasser.

I usually get 18 - 19 commuting and have gotten up to 21 on the highway taking it easy. I get about 9. 5 - 11 towing. I'm happy with mine.

I average around 15. 5 empty combined driving, best ever was 17. 6. Towing my 5th wheel around 12, my mileage has stayed the same since new, I have 30k on it now. Pretty happy considering the size of the truck, 4. 10s, 4X4, and automatic. I would not have bought a 1 ton truck if mileage was a concern.

Recent 2500 mile segment averaged 16. 75 mpg... this included about 1000 miles of towing.

I get 17+- around local and 20+ on road trips empty. I pull a 5th wheel Wildcat 28BHS and get 12. 5+ . I can send the spreadsheet that shows the actual calculations if you'd like. I'd post it but I'm not sure how.

Here is all my mileage so far. I'm usually pulling an 18' trailer with Kubota on the weekends, so it's not as good as it could be, but as Bertram points out, I wouldn't have bought a big truck if mileage was the concern. I've pulled as much as 20k without issue.

Total fuel: 1,432. 2

Overall Mileage is: 16. 585



The best was 20. 222, and the worst was 9. 860, but that was while pulling a 40' 5th wheel to Martinsville, VA. I ran it very hard so as to show up a Ferd (which I did).

My truck has only about 1000 miles. I just took it to Maine last weekend. With the truck empty, cruise set at 73, ac on, I got 19. 2. On the way home I slowed down to about 66-67, I got 21 mpg. Hand calculated! I must have gotten a good one, I never would have believed it would be that good.

With just over 5K on the clock I'm averaging 13. 49mpg. This is hand calculated. I have taken two trips of about 500 miles with the 13K fifth wheel. I average around 17mpg without the trailer, on the highway (65-70mph), and just under 12mpg while towing at 60-65mph.



This is my daily driver so I don't expect great mileage. My 2001 got better highway mileage (17-18 with 4:10 gears and the NV4500) but got only about 9-10 while towing.



I know others say they get better, but this is my story and I'm sticking with it...

Early 05 2500 4X4 3. 73 Just finished the 2nd tank and got 16. 8 hand calculated. No towing, very little hot rodding. I get the MPG flash next Thursday. If that gets me close to 18 I'll be happy.

No, I don't drive over 70, usually 60-65. Drive like there is an egg between my foot and pedal. Oh for the good old days of the 1990 that got a consistent 20 mpg with the 4. 1 rear end!! Rarely see 16 mpg now.

Just towed 1100 miles round trip this weekend doing 65mph, averaged 15 with the empty trailer and 13 loaded with a Suburban. Trip computer shows high numbers, but thats only if you reset it when your up to speed. Somewhat disappointed with the mpg since so many here have posted higher numbers.

Yep Warren, these new ones do not get the same mileage as the old ones. Towing 22k# from OKC to Vegas , I will usually get 9-11 MPG ,depending on the weather, wind across Tx and NM being the big factor. Have 84k miles on the rig now.
