Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) What kind of miles are you getting out of your lift pump and what year is your truck?

Does the VP44 DIE immediately after a lift pump failure or does it slowly die due to starvation?? Wondering what the "average" life of these things is. . I have 112K and starting to wonder when!

Got 80,000 out of first lift pump then at 100,000 installed a pusher pump, so far 2nd lift pump is still going strong and truck still has the original injector pump. truck is a 99 with 155,000 miles on it with hi-flow injectors and a power edge box.

'01 38. 5K... changed it today... higher pressures now then anytime since I out the fuel pressure gauge in.

I'm at ~70,000 miles and I'm about to install a fourth Lift Pump. This last one (number 3) has died the worse, it gets down to 3 psi at idle, the rest I would swap out once they started to fall to 8-10 psi at Idle.

57,000 miles just had the 4th one installed in San Diego on a vacation. dealer said no warr due to mods but the rep for dodge approved it after talking to him on the phone. 3 of the pumps died approx 1000 miles or so after replacing the fuel filter. coincidence? runs constantly at 16 psi. when they died went to "0" instantly and truck would only idle. luckily VP44 still running great. ken

12PSI @ idle, 9PSI @ 70MPH.

still OK at 38k. I use power service fuel add. on every fill. I also try to fill at 1/2 tank. . Fuel press. 13 psi at idle and about 9psi running 80mph on the highway.

Are you guys that are getting over 100K miles on them keeping your fuel tank full? I always fill up whenever I drive a 1/4 tank or more. I have an Amoco right down the street from me. Wondering if this little tip really saves the pump??

I put on a fuel pressure gauge at 45K miles and found my lift pump was DOA. Don't know how long it had been that way... . :{

58,000, on the stock lift pump, never had a problem with it, installed the PE4200 yesterday.

i always fill up when the tank is empty (never just fill up to say a half a tank) but i run the tank low almost every time, i have ran it so low on occasions that the truck has held 33 gal. at fill-up.

I always let it get down to the 1/8 level.



But I never fill the tank plumb full. I let it go till the fuel nozzle stops on it's own. My ex-dealer told me that would help the fuel level sensor work properly, so far he is right.



It may not help the LP keep from failing, but I am going to stick to the same routine as I have for the last 60k or so.

My story...

My first one failed at 84,000 miles. I now have 138,000+ miles on the truck and the second one is still doing great. I can pull it down to 9# standing on it hard and I am running an EZ on the truck... I figure that is good enough not to worry about. I generally fill at the 1/2 tank mark, but it has been down low enough for the low fuel light to come on; I don't make a habit of this.

Original lift pump dead at 68k when fuel pressure guage installed. No idea how long. VP cratered at 74k. Basically died completely on trip. Took dealer 2 weeks to diagnose, order and install new one. Now at 91k and 2nd lift pump still working fine. Although I always carry a spare now.
