Hey guys, up here where I live they have now switched 100% to USLD. What oil am I supposed to use? I have read the new motors (after Jan 1) are to use CJ-4. What do us first geners use? Thanks!

I think he is asking CI or CJ

That is greatly debated. Some report the CJ will destroy your pre 07 engine, while others report CJ will result in 30% LESS engine wear.

Although it's true the CJ has less detergents and lower TBN keep in mind that we will now use ULSD so less detergent is kinda not important. TBN is lower, however CJ remains within the desirable TBN range over a longer period, unlike CI. I doubt CJ will result in more frequent oil changes. I's not going to be used with high sulfer fuel. Unless you buy off road/farm fuel.

CI will become more and more difficult to locate. I do know Delo will continue with the gallon jugs of CI... . for some time. Shell Rotella CI is available in 55 gallon drums.

It's reported that you can mix CI and CJ in the older engines, like Tugboatphil does. In the long run, it most likely don't matter. Just put oil in that thing. Change it about every 8,000 or more. I change the buses at 10 to 16 on Rotalla "T" CI-4

Last Rotella I bought was CJ4. Everything else was $1-2/ gal higher. I did some research, and came to the same conclusion GL did- it shouldnt hurt anything. I am running it now, and if I note any significant changes in my oil analysis, I'll let y'all know.

Use the CI as long as you can. I know Amsoil will continue to produce the CI spec oils well into the future. Not sure about the others. The CJ4 spec is designed more around what is required for 2007 emissions rather than the ULSD. The ULSD is just a cleaner burning fuel. The 2007 emissions are so tight that everyone will be running EGR and some other systems that are SUPER harsh on oil, and there were some guidlines the oil had to follow.

Fir your truck I would recommend either the Amsoil Marine and diesel 15w40 or Heavy Duty Diesel 5W30 if yo want to go synthetic.

If not, your favorite flavor of CI4 15w40 will be just fine as long as you can find it.
