i need to change the turbo on the 89 engine i put into a 96 that had a v10, i only see 25psi out of the current (stock) turbo and cant find a reasonable used hx-hy 35 for less than a couple hundred bucks but i see other turbos (garret, turbotecnics and the like) going for a lot less, i guess its supply and demand. so what ones would fit and work well? im not looking for a race truck, just a little more than stock with its slooooooow spooling. also i will be adding an intercooler so fabricating the piping is not a problem.

If your stock turbo is slow spooling, then anything else (bigger) is gonna be even slower. You could swap turbine/exhaust housings. You should have a 18cm housing on a stock 89, you could swap in a 16cm housing. Net 2 more psi of boost and slightly improved spoolup. Although they're not cheap, around 135-150 new, and hard to find used.

not really looking for larger but more efficient or another turbo with smaller exhaust housing and possibly larger compressor housing for a little more boost pressure and cfm. i feel 25psi is a little light. and if i get a new exh. housing im still stuck with the puny 2 inch compressor outlet from the non intercooled turbo. how big a restriction is that gonna be?

Yes the 2 inch outlet is a restriction. You can upgrade but you'll need a compressor wheel and housing from an intercooled H1C or WH1C. You can change the wheels yourself.

Or you can do an HTT upgrade. Lots of turbo threads you can go back and read.
