O. K. , I thought I had this all figgured out, but now I am confused. What is the difference between a lift pump, p pump, VE pump, injector pump, etc. I know some of these must be doubles. Help!

Robert

Lift pump: Supplies fuel pressure to the injection pump. On 12V it is on the side of the engine mechanically driven, behind the injection pump. 24V I think are electric(they are too new for me:D )

P-Pump: In-line style injection pump on 12V engines 94-mid 98. Very easy to bomb, can get lots o fuel from them.

VE Pump: Rotary Style injection pump on the notorious first gen trucks.

Injection pump: Delivers fuel at high pressure to the injectors. It controls timing, fuel pressure, and amount of fuel and many other things. Basically the heart of a diesel engine.

The only other one used in Dodges is the VP44, used on the 24 valve engines.

There are probably other injection pumps that were on engines used in applications other than Dodge. I think Lucas made a pump that was used on agricultural/industrial 12 valve B series.

Mike

The VE & P pump are injector pumps, you may hear of different pumps in the other forums, but they are attempts to replace the stock lift pumps that are failure prone.

Yes, Lucas/Cav made pumps as you said. In addition, Mitsubishi and Lucas/Cav made some of the marine pumps.

And dont forget the CP4 pump for the HPCR engines; the new quiet ones, that can still make a little noise when properly tuned (4" straight pipe), but not near the throaty growl of a 1st Gen with 275K and a short 4"exhaust.

hdm48, and boatpuller,

Ha, ha, ha. Very funny!:D One question, where is the bilge pump mounted on our first gens?;) And what about a submersible pump. I have heard that before, isn't that what they call a powerjoke under water?:D :D Thanks.

Robert

And you all forgot.....

Raw water pump;)

I got one of those on my marine Cummins... ...

(For those who are "landlubbers", this pump is mounted in place of the power steering pump. It sucks sea water thru a fitting in the hull, thru a strainer, into the pump, thru the transmission oil cooler, fuel cooler, heat exchanger, then into the exhaust stream just after the turbo outlet to cool and muffle the exhaust. )

And to change oil on that particular beast, I need to use my.....

Oil change pump

I think we may be pumped dry on this subject!!!!!

Pun intended!!
