My friend is looking at buying a 2004 Dodge 2500 but he is not sure what ratio rearend it has. It is not close by for him to look at so he was wondering if you can tell by the VIN or perhaps do all 04 trucks have 3. 73's?

Any Dodge dealer with the VIN in hand should be able to decipher the differential gear code. It is almost certainly a 3. 73 which is the standard gear. A 4. 10 ratio would have to be a special order.

There should be a tag on the rear diff cover and I'm not sure if its coded or if it has the actual number but it should be there.

But that means nothing as you could easily buy either sitting on a lot... mine was sitting at a dealer and has 4. 10s, the hard part was finding a manual with 4. 10s... they were all autos.

... also, any truck on the dealer's lot that was equipped with the "Off Road Package" (tow hooks, skid plates, orange shock tubes) came with 4. 10s and LSD.

Don't forget that an early '04 SO might have the 10. 5" rear end versus the 11. 5" that came on the HO and all trucks from 04. 5 and up.
