What states have the worst roads

Thanks, TDR Staff

Sorry. Have to vent about tires!

Brake controllers

After making a trip to N Dakota from Texas I was amazed at how bad the secondary roads are in some states.

So not counting Interstates where have you found the roads to be rough and bouncy especially when towing?

I know you said no Interstates, but I just got back from Michigan and must say Chicago Interstates are a poor waste of concrete. I have driven on better gravel roads around here. Worst part is you have to pay to use them!!!

Just completed a 10,000 mile trip back east and I think Pa. , Mich. Mass, Ill, and Idaho would be my votes. Hate to include a western state in there but Idaho sure neglects their roads. Broke 2 tires and a wheel in Pa. on 5th wheel so I have no plans to go thru there again.

Sure to be some one who will disagree, but the roads in Wa. and Ore. are nice to return to. :D :D

ARIZONA! Lived there for too many years. They lay down a layer of chip seal and call it a road, it pot holes the first rain.

ADOT's idea of a road patch is two spanish-only speaking state employees in a truck with a bed full of asphalt. Always one leaning on his shovel and the other throwing asphalt in the general direction of the pot hole. No kidding.

TEXAS - deeply rutted asphalt from truck traffic, VERY difficult to tow comfortably with an RV, and LOUSY speed limits! Nothin' like driving 2 day across a state at 45-50 mph, and watching stuff shake off yer rig from the bad road...

I vote for Michigan. The interstates I have been on have a lot of bounce to them when towing. Some of the back roads are like wash boards.

Where in Texas did you go through that had 45-50 mph speed limits? Everywhere I know around here is 70mph including the small back roads highways... . Some of the roads do get rutted, thats a fact, but I think Texas has some of the best roads in the country overall... .

WTF???? Are you kidding?

Didn't mean to step on any Texan's toes - but back in '96 on our trip across the US from California to Florida, Hwy 10 and then to 20 across Texas, the roads were as I described above - and speed limits for truck/trailer combos like ours was posted at the border as 55 mph - but the road was so bad, we had to go slower to avoid all the ruts and bumps... Sorry, but that's what WE encountered at that time!

And believe me, it takes a LOOOoong time to get across Texas at 50 mph or so!

Texas Diesel, that picture reminds me of a similar incident here in PA. PENNDOT had tarred and chipped a dead deer laying along the road. Along comes my buddy who takes a picture and sends it to the local newspaper.

Employees were supposedly reprimended. I can just hear that one; "Now bubba, ya kan't be doing that".

TX? AZ? NO WAY!

Both of you fine states are my neighbors, and frankly, I HATE to be welcomed home by the sorry a$$ bumpity bump of the roads here in NEW MEXICO. I swear, even the new roads stink after about 3 years. I think the politicians are getting kick-backs from the contractors that to half-@#$ jobs on the roads they are paid millions to build.

When I go to Texas (almost every week), I am welcomed into the Lone Star state by smooth, wide, and quiet hiways. Also, I think the drivers in Texas (at least west-Texas) are some of the most courteous I've ever seen. They hit the shoulder to let faster traffic pass, and give you a good-bye wave when you zip around them. Here in NM, if you're behind slow traffic on a windy two-lane, it may be 30 miles before they'll let you pass. Go Texas!

AZ? Well, all I can say is you people drive aweful fast!

Those 6,7and 8 axle semi trailers in Michigan and Ontario have got to be contributing to the torn up off ramps and secondary roads. I did a double take first time I followed one of these 'semis' down an off ramp and saw them lift 3 or more axle in order to take 90 degree corner. Looked the turn area over, and had to drive our unit out on to the shoulder to get around the broken asphalt. What are the DOT hacks and state goverment thinking when they allow this sort of thing to happen to their roads. Bad enough in the northern states to have yearly frost heaves. To ignore the "bridge formula" that most of the other states use to prevent these occurances doesn''t make much sense. Hope the federal DOT is not funding these roads.

Feel better after venting!

Gotta love those Texas freeways smooth, fast and polite drivers. :) :) :) :) :)

I've traveled and lived all over the country. Anyone that has been to idaho will tell you, we've got the worst roads. For some reason they try and patch the potholes here and the patch is worse than the pothole. Idaho has the worst roads I've ever seen. You Californians take note, you don't want to move up here because the roads are so bad. Please find another state to immigrate to. :D :D
