I have found it much easier to remove the oil filter on my 05 than it was on my 99. I have a strap type tool where the strap tightens as I turn the rod with a half inch ratchet and extension. However since you can get right at the filter from below I think it would be easier with a different style. What do you use? Where did you get it?

I've never need a filter wrench on stuff I own. Don't Bubba tight it and it will come off just by hand... . maybe it's just my Shera power though... . "dorm grip" hehe.

I don't know what they're called but I use the same style that we've been using as long a I can remember. A round metal band with a handle that tightens as you turn it. I had to cut a chunck of my plastic inner fender to use it, but it works good. I also have one for the fluted filters from Geno's. That works good too. I just have a few non fluted filters left to use up.

I use the same one as Bertram65. It will slip on the gorilla installed factory filter... just use some masking tape on the filter to snug it up and give it more friction. If I recall, I've read on this forum that some people break the all plastic 6 in 1 from Geno's.

I can see that happening if you use the hole for a 3/8" extension, I used a socket on the plastic tool and it worked great even with the "gorilla installed factory filter".

I have to say though when I did oil changes, etc for a living, my favorite oil filter wrench was the plier type. Worked on most vehicles and worked alot better than the strap type.

I have about 6 of them I've tried /"Collected" over the years. The same style that Grey Wolf has is the best. I've never had one that I couldn't get off with that.

I'm with Nate and J Hoffman, I use my hands to remove oil filter. I change oil about once a month so gasket doesn't ever get hard and stick to the mount. I use DC-4 compound (a silicone grease used in aviation) on the gasket and never ever Bubba tight. The instructions on the filter state hand tight plus 1/2 turn... should still be able to remove by hand.

I bought the 3 fingered snap on in preperation to remove the SNUGGED up factory filter, it worked great. I probably won't need it again since I'll be the only one putting anymore filters on.
