I'm installing a Mag-Hytec and synthetic gear lube for towing our new 5er, and was wondering which lube to use. I'm so confused, and thought a poll might help. Any additional comments are apprecieated.

Right now it's Mobil One. I will change it when I get around to it to a 75w140. I'm not sure of the brand that I will go with, maybe Amsoil.

If you are going to be towing that 5'er, I would go with a 75W-140, regardless of the brand name that you choose. Your owner's manual recommends that weight for towing.

The factory recommends 90-140 synthetic for towing. That is assuming you have a factory cover. With the Maghytec I noted the even with dino 90w my towing temp never exceeded 180F. So when I switched to synthetic I installed Mobil1 75-90. My temps pulling 12,000 in 100F are still right at 190F. My worry was that in the winter the 140 would be too thinck especially with the increased capacity of the Maghytec. Once upon a time when I lived in AZ I put 140W in both axles of my truck (dakota) and after a trip to Texas in January ( avg temp 50-19F) I got home with leaking axle seals on the front axle. Upon inspection the 140W destroyed the seals because ( IMO ) it didnt flow and was way too thick. The front axle was not doing any work and there was no lubricant heating. You could see a severe build up of burned lubricant under the seals. This may not happen to the rear because it is always working. Just my thoughts and experience. Perhaps others have sucessfully run 90-140 in the winter with no problems. BTW I have no friction modifier and my "sure-loc" sure doesnt lock!!!

I used 2k75w90 for 13,400 and developed ring and pinion noise. Have had RP Maxgear for about 5k now and noise is gone. Plan on trying RP 85w140 next time.

Klenger, I have the RP Maxgear 75w90 and will switch to the 85w140 next time. My noise went away so I,m not too worried right now.
