Vaughn,

You can O ring all you want, but what headgasket are you going to use?

The OEM Multilayer 3rd Gen headgaskets compression sealing rings are not perfectly round.

An O ring setup would not seal to this.

????????

Has anyone thought about some kind of screen between the turbo and intercooler that would be able to catch pieces of a blown turbo without causing too much restriction in the air flow?

Ouch

Pirate4x4,

Sorry to hear about your loss:( , Let us know what route you end up taking to get her back on the road. Might want to post some pics when you have her all ripped apart.

Pirate,

Call the Lafayette shop of Scheid Diesel.

www.scheiddiesel.com

They have fire ringed a couple of '03/'04 trucks. They can also take care of any damage that may have happened in the motor. All the shops I have talked to are reccomending twins for the TST box... everything else is just too fragile for how fast it spools the turbo(s).

I blew up the turbo in my '03 SO. I was running a TST, 4" exhaust, and afe. I was towing 10,000lbs (two competition rock buggies) when the turbo barfed it's guts into the motor.

DC denied my warranty, because they believed there was an aftermarket box on the truck due to engine codes in the PCM. After lots of phone calls, meetings with attorneys, and being hung up on by the area rep (a real tool, I might add) the only way to get anything done would have been to sue them. I decided to suck it up and fix it myself... I sure wasn't going to pay the $13,000 the dealer wanted to fix it! :--)

I got the truck home, and have it apart. The only visible damage is the fragged turbo, a contaminated intercooler, and bent valves. There are turbo chunks sitting on top of the #6 piston, but no visible damage to the cylinder(s) or piston(s). The head is at the machine shop being checked for other damage...

Questions:

1) Is there a way to o-ring this head?

2) What is the max boost this head/gasket can handle without being o-ringed, reliably?

3) What is the best single turbo for 400-500hp? I need it to be RELIABLE, as we tow fairly large loads across country often. Where can I get said turbo?

4) Where is a good source for intercoolers? Are there any better aftermarket intercoolers I should be looking at?

5) Are there any good aftermarket cams for this motor that make good reliable power?

aren't you the guy that banned the diesel guys from your site for asking questions????? I am a bit surprised to see you asking questions... ... ... .

we got an 03 sittin here that has blew up a few b-1. Makes life fun now going to tear it down and put twins on it and a few other things... ... ...

as for warranty you can do a search on this site to get a feel of what we think about warranty. If your gonna play your gonna pay... ... .....

you could always just run it stock... ..... ;)

What in the hell are you talking about? We have a forum dedicated to tow rigs, etc...

Thanks to those of you that have given me good info. Keep it coming... .

No, I didn't happen to think of the B1 when I posted, but I believe the PDR40 and Jammer are pretty tough turbos. I've only heard of 1 maybe 2 guys who've been able to hurt a PDR40.

Hey Pirate, Will you still run TST on new motor when finished?

I love the power of the TST PMCR but have only gone past 4-4 a couple times ( well maybe more than a couple times ) but power at 3-3 4-3 4-4 all very nice.

Hopefully at these settings turbo issues will not be a problem.

What an idea???

I have also thought about this, it would of saved Dee Rawson's 12v on dyno day @ Edge.

Check it out.

Actually there's a better deal to be had - fordcummins.com has about 20 2003 HO motors complete for $6800. Got them from trucks that were involved in a train wreck en-route to their dealerships.

Anyhow, I don't need a new motor, I just need a couple of valves and a turbo/intercooler. The valves, etc won't cost much, but I just want to get the best turbo to handle my irresponsible driving habits. :D

daytripper - Yeah, I'll probably still run the TST box. I might give the new Edge box a try (I do lots of product reviews for my website) but I do like the power of the TST box. I just hate all the codes it throws. I guess I need to see about having it reflashed... .

I used to know a couple of really wild diesel mechanics in the 70s and I asked them about a screen after they blowup some of their turbos. They claimed there wasn't a screen tight and strong enough that would work without plugging the system. Craig

So Peirs says they don't know of any single turbo that will handle the TST box... There twin turbo kits are 6-8 weeks out.

I believe JR Adkins has twin turbo kits available for the 03-04's.

You might try contacting him.

Robert,

I took my stock turbo out with 3 hard pulls on setting 4-9 testing the new transmission. The truck had 940 total miles on it. Yeah I know I'm sick doing a full billet transmission at 940 miles but the racing bug was too big.

Lance, I really hate what happened to you. I've been sorrowfully following the threads since the turbo grenaded your motor. I must say however, you've got to be impressed with the durability of the engine. If such had happened to a gasser, I believe total replacement would have been the only option. I'm constantly amazed at how tough the diesel engine really is.

Good luck man! I'd love to help you out with some parts, but the only thing I've got to offer is the grab handle I hacksawed off. If you want it though, it's yours! :p
