So I'd like to set the timing on my '94 but am having trouble getting the tools. I've e-mailed Miller and haven't got a response. Snap-on doesn't offer the barring tool with there kit, so if I ordered that with the kit it would be about $300!! Also I've done a search about timing tools and some people say the dial indicators that Miller and Snap-on sell are junk. Anyone got some good ideas for me?

The Cummins p/n for the barring tools is 3824591. You can barr the engine over by using the alternator nut but you can only go one way, so it is a pain if you overshoot. Shadrach

I have been buying on a one at a time basis , Cummins gauge holder was cheaper than Snap On , a friend found a deal on the DV valve socket , I used someone else's Cummins turning tool , worked good , bought one from Snap On , it sounded & felt like it was jumping teeth , never did find out why yet , as for the gauge , you want a 30mm range & the larger of the 2 shafts [ or spacer for small ] , then you need the foot adapter to go on the gauge , I think that was about 1" , check in you area for a machine supply or order over the net .
All this is more work , or you can get it all from Cummins or Snap on , some times your see some one sell here .

I've been planning on advancing my timing a bit. It is now at 13 Deg. I have the delevery valve socket and have been able to measure the plunger drop ok but I don't have the timing gear puller. They cost about $35 and I will only use it one time. Can anyone offer alternatives?

I have a set of tools, Minus the barring tool. I have been renting them out and have done so 4 times. I can send them to you if you send them back with $50 in the box. Also, I can't have them gone for too long. The last time they went out, they were gone for 6 months. Anyhow, anybody that needs them, let me know and I'll send them out.

Where did you get the Cummins tools from? Is there somewhere on line? The last time I went to a Truck shop that dealt Cummins parts they didn't seem very willing to look up parts for a dodge truck. I'm getting burned out on this truck, can't seem to find out how to keep it running after finding so many problems: fuel lines, brake lines, broken spring in lift pump, leaking pre heater, some valves needed adjusting and bad throttle cable... . no I want to check my timing and overflow valve. It's amazing that it always would start with one crank of the engine even after sitting for months or not plugged in at 20* except once it has been driven and warmed up it would start ticking then want to die. Did I buy a lemon?

I went to the Cummins dealer in town here , some of the tools were cheaper from Cummins-gauge holder & some were cheaper from Snap On -barring tool .
The last guy did not or gave up on maintenance , once you go through it you should be good .

I just paid to get mine done as I was getting 7 MPG and it is winter. Mine was like yours, the entire front end needs refeshed. Brakes, tie rods, ball joints, u-joints, whel bearings, rotors, brakes, and tires. I got enough done to get me thru winter but I am inyour same situation. At least the engine seems good on mine which is a relief.

How about some links on where you are getting timing tools.

No thats the tool for the 1st gen with the VE pump .
The difference is that the gauge holder is shorter & fatter .
In Snap On's catalog they have it wrong by 1 yr .

You mean the snap-on one is for a 1st gen? I've searched around for dial indicators and found vw ones that work with dodge 89-94. Shouldn't that say 89-93? My friend runs a vw shop, he showed me his dial indicator, it looked like the adaptor was to thin. It looks like i'll have to just order a Snap-on one or try to get a Miller.

Your are correct , I also have the VW one / VE .
It can be hard to order out of Snap Ons catalog when its labeled wrong .
Is there a Cummins dealer in your area ?
Its cheaper from Cummins , for that part of kit .
Remember we are talking about a gauge holder , not the gauge .
You can find a gauge cheaper from many places , it should have a 30mm range , then you need to get a set of extensions for the gauge , the one out of the set is 1 11/16" .

Miller wanted $50. 00 more for their kit. Not to mention their web site is worthless. They must cater mainly to professionals. Ayway, I sure won't be giving them my money. Rant over.

How does the adapter attach to the dial indicator? Does it screw on? I guess I need to know if I need a special dial indicator because of the way it fits the adapter.

From my info , there are to standard size round mounting areas at base of dial indicator , its the larger of the two , in my collection , I had a spacer that went around the smaller base .
This just slips into the gauge holder , the Snap On hold has 1 screw to tighten & the Cummins has 2 screws to tighten .

Here's a picture of the Snap-on set. The box says "SP500 Diesel Gauge Set". The gauge holder has SP5002 on the side. The delivery valve socket says SP503. Both the gauge and the socket say BluePoint.
