What are the common things that happen to a 5. 9 that runs away?

I just bought a 95 with a engine that ran away because a blown turbo had dumped a ton of oil into the intercooler, unbeknownst to the person that put the replacement turbo on.

When they fired the truck back up the RPM's kept climbing until after awhile it just slowed itself down and died. .

Nothing is on the outside of the block and the truck didn't leak any oil.

Any ideas?

Depends on how what RPM it was turning, and how much oil was getting into the cylinders. possibly, spun rod and or main bearings, bent push tubes, bent valves, bent rods. If it cranks over and runs out smooth enough it could possibly be ok, but it wouldn't be a bad idea to check it out anyway.

I had a bus 5. 9l run on us due to gov sticking. could not suffocate, due to to many air leaks. So I sat back and watched the smoke show, and steam. Now this motor is out and been replaced, do not know if it turns over, because we had a bus with bad trans. Would it be worth getting and tearing down. For the stock horse power is above my 97 cummins. Help or hints.

EMD locomotive engines would run away if the blower seals leaked badly. When lighting off a prime mover that had set for a long tim, I used to have two guys with big CO2 fire extinguishers, one at each intake. I keep a small CO2 extinguisher in the bed tool box just for that.

Got the injectors pulled today and the pump. One rocker is ruined, push tubes seem to be straight.

number 3 & 5 injectors have broken tips, they are gone.....
