Used Edge EZ. Make sure it is for the correct year truck. Should be able to find one of a 100 bucks or so.

Replacing the stock muffler will help too. Generally speaking, "cheap" also means "I don't want to mess with gauges". So anything you can do to lower EGT will be a good thing since no gauges means he won't have any idea what his EGTs are--best to help make sure he can't get over 1300 at all. So to replace the stock muffler, I'd go with a piece of straight pipe or a straight-through type truck muffler.

The used EZ is also a great idea. That's the first thing I did to my 2000, and the second was ditching the stock muffler. After that it was injectors, and with that I had to get gauges.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned a low fuel psi warning light as the first and highest priority mod.

My opinion of a mild or low buck upgrade listed in order of importance.

1. Way to monitor fuel psi. Warning light or gauge. Your choice of one or both.

2. You choice of box. EZ is a good one to start with. I like the JuiceW/Attitude for its gauges. I'd like to try a Quadzilla with its gauges and all the adjustability. Even though Banks is not so popular around here, the Banks "Bullet" would make a good budget upgrade with it's built in EGT gauge... if you purchase the thermocouple.

3. Upgraded transfer pump with either high flow banjo bolts or bigger fuel lines with high flow fittings.

3. EGT gauge if not included with box. Westach boost/EGT combo is a good deal and can be hidden on top of the steering column or in the cubby hole next to the radio.

4. Exhaust mod. As previously mentioned, Geno's muffler delete kit is a good buy. I also like the Pro Series from Magnaflow for its 409 stainless 4" turbo back kit that is very budget minded and quiet.

5. Intake mod. I'm very happy with my PSM air duct and ProGaurd 7 filter.

This list doesn't end. Not for me and not for most any other TDR member. Power is addictive.

**Edit** I wasn't as clear as I meant to be. What I meant to start with numbers 1&2. Then proceed to the higher numbers as the addiction takes hold.

Daugherty's list is pretty good but for just a little power I'd say the EZ is the way to go. If he adds 275 injectors to that, a transmission up grade (if auto) or a clutch upgrade will become a necessity. No matter what he does, a fuel pressure monitor of some kind is cheap insurance.

There is a list a created a few years ago byTed Jannetty that is a good reference for upgrades.

Fuel pressure gauge should have come from the factor on these trucks.

An auto transmission upgrade is not cheap, but it takes a good custom transmission to stand up over the long run.

Ted made some statements that exhaust and intake in stock form is good to much higher HP.

An EGT gauge is a second highly recommended item.

The used EZ edge is the easiest way to improve the response of the go pedal, as I stated above. The best fuel mileage improvement to your right foot and how you use it. Most changes will not improve mileage that much, except maybe the Smarty at 650 or a new cam at much more. Best mileage will never we found in an auto transmission truck.

Adding goodies for more power and improved fuel mileage are not necessarily going to happen if one is having fun with new power.

I have a full DTT transmission, Magnaflow SS 4" exhaust, PDR35, 4" Branks Elbow/EB, Jammer 1's, and Comp in EZ. Does the truck get better mileage? Not really! Does it tow well at 20K combined weight? Yes! Got 11. 68 MPG for Washington to Arizona last week. Highest was 13 and lowest was 11.

Is the truck fun to bobtail around in? You bet, a tight torque converter and transmission completely changes how the truck drives.

Did it cost a lot of money? Yes

Was it wroth it? Don't ask that question of my DW!

I'm certainly not Ted Jannetty, but my experience has clearly shown me that both are very constrictive, and the recommendation (not just yours) that even stock trucks should have an EGT gauge reinforces this.

Only the dyno knows! The rest of us kid our selfs that it has more power! Take the muffler off and with all the extra noise it must have more power!

Oo. Oo. Oo.

I got my AFE filter box setup on Ebay new for $200. Aluminized exhaust systems have gotten cheap as well. I think the January issue of Diesel Power had an add for $150. There always an add in there for ones at $250 in the back of the mag as well. I bought mine from Warp Speed Performance 4-5 years ago for $299 and that was a bargain back then. Used EZ's should be a dime a dozen by now. My died after only three years. If you could find some selling a Smarty for a few hundred bucks that would be a real find. But then you'd better plan for an EGT gauge as well.
