Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) What's the difference between 94 to 98 12v trucks?

I just call a Dodge dealer with the vin when I want to know what it came with. They are always happy to read it to me, there may be easier ways, but this works for me. .

As Wade mentioned, the '94's and some '95's have the WH1C turbo

Compressor is different but the exhuast housing is the same 12cm as the later trucks.





I am very curious about this 1995 shortbed? Does it have a rebuilt title? I have never seen or heard of an original pre 1998 shot bed with a Cummins.

Title is good. Ran a CARFAX on it and its perfect. I found a website that translates VIN numbers and it began its life as a Reg. Cab long bed. Someone must have wanted an extended cab and changed it.

I was just thinking about when I bought the truck. It had 98 mirrors and 24 valve emblems on the doors. Also the body molding in the newer style which is still on it.

I don't recall if this was mentioned, but I think the earlier model 2nd gens didn't have 4wheel ABS.

Correct! It was an option on many trucks, the '00 front axle I have waiting to upgrade my brake system (along with a hydroboot set up) does NOT have front antilock.

As Wade mentioned, the '94's and some '95's have the WH1C turbo- not a bad thing so far as I know though. I like how my '95 sounds over my '96(turbo whine is considerably less).

All the '94's have the WH1C. As mentioned by Cooker, stock it's the same 12cm housing. Mine had a wastegated 14cm on it when I installed the 40.

I'm a diehard fan of the 12V as well and hope drive them for the next 20 years or more...

I agree but I wouldn't mind quieting it down a little...

Sounds like someone changed the Vin and put it on a different truck, May need to look elsewhere for a VIN to see if it matches, look inside the doors and under the hood behind the grill.

Cool then I got a newer truck for the price of a 95. :-laf I already checked for all of that and the VIN numbers match. I think that someone just changed the cab and put a short bed on it.

I don't know when 4-wheel ABS became available but my '96 has it.



I've owned 3 2-wheel drive CTDs now and have liked them all. All have had limited slip and with decent tires and some weight in the back I've gotten around pretty well. The worst is taking off in the snow on an incline when they haven't sanded the roads, but I did haul snowmobiles into the mountains several times without getting stuck or chaining up.

If they changed the cab the VIN is attached to the cab and does not match the frame, The only part of the truck that has the correct Vin is the cab, the chassis I bet is way different. Man your truck is very interesting. I would love to see and hear more pictures about it?

Quite a while back (5-6 years ago) I ran into 2 trucks somewhat similar to this short bed cummins. My gramps was looking for a cummins, and he was told about some guy that ran a park and sell that had 2 of them. Gramps wanted a first gen.

We show up and this guy had a 1985 4-door long bed 2wd cummins, beat to crap. he said it was his "lot truck" and he had it since 90 or 91. Must have been a really early 4-door conversion job...



He also had a 1996 or 1997 5-speed, shortbed, club cab cummins. It was painted yellow (which was also not an option back then. . ). He swore up and down it was original. I crawled underneath and someone had shortned the frame on it. It was a clean job, they even changed the trim on the cab to match the trim on the later model short bed they used.



He probably would have bought the truck had it not been for the half-*****ed paint job. It had orange peel like nothing I have ever seen. Almost looked like bed liner!!!

The VIN that is in the cab is the one that I decoded and that was the one that came up as a regular cab. So either they switched the VIN or there is some other way they did it. Im not worried about it in the least bit. I have had it for over 2 years and it runs and drives as good as or better than any other 12 valve I have driven. There is no hack marks under the truck so whoever did it atleast it looks like they did it right. The paint is almost perfect.

Donnie Earl goes and steals a CC/SB 98 12v, then he goes and buys a ragged out/rolled over 95 12v for a couple grand, swaps the VIN's and he's got a "legit" truck.

I wouldnt be worried either. It looks like a clean truck. Ive had quite a few "pieced together" trucks, as well as a few salvage title trucks, and never regretted it.

the 24V emblems on the door are kinda a weird thing though... . Maybe the entire doors are from a 24V??

Is the turbo on 12v man. transmission trucks the same as 02 6sp. ? What is the difference? I understand valve springs need to be changed when installing exhaust brake, what about Jacobs e-brake?

Same HX35 turbo with the 12cm turbine housing. As I understand it though some HX35's had slightly different compressor wheels but I'm not sure what years are different.
