Yes if you want to get any real use out of the brake. Some can be used at a reduced back pressure with the stock springs. If you're going to spend the $ on the brake then spend some more on the springs and change them out, it's not that difficult.

There's a write up in the last TDR (Issue 54) that starts on page 30. They use compressed air to hold the valves, but it's not really necessary. I (like most others) just made sure the piston was at TDC so the valve wouldn't drop in.

Yes, all 12 valves should upgrade to 60lb heavy duty valve springs for exhaust brakes. You can get them directly from Pacbrake.

I've seen lots of club short 12v's, but that's only the 2nd club short 24v I've seen

Forrest, the rarest club cab I ever saw was a '99 at Massdiesel's shop back in 2001. I had to look at the door sticker to make sure it was a '99! Dodge did carry the CC option into the early part of the '99 model year then dropped it.

Wow, there are more than just a few differences. What about brake jobs- front 2wd/4wd and rear brakes? My 02 truck's front brakes were so easy to do. I know the 12v trucks do not have rear disc brakes, are the drums hard to deal with? And those 4wd front ends- how are those holding up? Are the rear axles Dana 80? I think the same 3. 54 and 4. 10 were offered as auto and manual. Thank you all for the information, and please keep it coming.

All 2500 5-speeds have a hybrid Dana 80 auto's have a Dana 70 3500 all have a Dana 80. I ordered mine with the 241HD transfer case a 241 was standard the 241 HD was standard on the 3500. I 've had 2 clutches in my truck stock clutch was replaced at 140,000 cause the pilot bushing seized up on the input shaft so I got a South Bend clutchthat one lasted 40,000 and I blew out the center section so South Bend credited my next clutch and I upgraded to a 13" clutch and so far so good. I have replaced ball joints at 100,000 I now have over 200,000 on the truck and balljoints are still good. Disc brakes are easier than drum but drum are not impossible to do yourself. It just takes a little longer and you got to think about what your doing. All my u-joints are original except one on the front driveshaft. I still have the original batteries in my truck which I am amazed at. I'm the original owner I bought my truck in July 1997 ordered it in March of that year.
