WHAT ARE OTHER MEMBERS TALKING ABOUT WHEN THEY SAY THEY ARE REVAMPING THE CURRENT SIX SPEED IN THE 2001. 5's. I KNOW MINE WAS BUILT ON FEB5 & 6 THEN IT SAT FOR ABOUT TWO WEEKS. I'M JUST NOT CLEAR ON THE WHOLE SITUATION.

Cumapart, there is speculation that the 6 speed may be re-designed but thats not firm yet. The 6 speed orders are sometimes a little slow coming off the assembly line due to fact that they can only make so many a day. If you have one on order or just recieved it then thats as new as they get. Hope this helps,,,,,Pete

The one I picked off the lot this weekend has a manufacture date of 02-01, Mexican made. Dealer showed me paperwork that they took delivery on 16 Feb. It's now in my garage -- got tired of the run around.

Not even sure if there is a 6-speed problem anymore since folks who ordered after some of us have had there's within three weeks of order. Just my opinion.

Went to a dealer on Friday and asked to drive one of there new diesels, he said we don't have any, I said what about those three sitting on the lot, he said oh they must have just come in he said o. k. go drive one. It was the biggest peice of Sh-t I ever drove, made me feel good to own my problem child. The 2nd to 3rd shift ground no matter how long i held the clutch in and the 3rd to 4th done the same thing. Did not drive the other two. Ron

Just got a new 6spd. Have had it for 5 days now and have 520 miles on it. Haven't ground the gears yet. In fact don't use the clutch much to shift. Even the wife loves it! So far so good!

What exactly is the deal with the 6 speeds? Pete says there's a rumored redesign, what's the source for this rumor, and what problem is the redesign supposed to address?

I don't know what all the griping is about. I have a 3500 4x4 with the six in it. The only time I notice even the slightest hint of a gear grind is when it is bitter cold and I didn't let the tempermental beast warm up as long as she needs. Other wise I give 'er the gears on watch the others in my mirror. I do love this truck so...

Me too, no problems and no grind with mine at a whopping 4000 miles. Wish I had more miles to post, but I live/work in the same town. My ETH/DEE was smooth from day one, I think the problems are related to the new DEE's that are on the line at St. Louis, waiting for a solution from NV. Hope they work it out for all of you that are waiting, the ETH is a great truck.

My 99 AUTO hasn't made a "grinding" sound yet shifting up or down, but would trade it for a 6 speed in heartbeat. Dave

I have a 6-speed and no gear grind other than self induced when trying to shift without using clutch. Which I have since stopped doing after a lecture on why the 6-speed is not made to do that!! #ad
I have 11,300+ and no problems so far. Was a little stiff and hard to find 5th when new just normal and it is fine now. Probably be better after I add synthetic oil.

Have a new 01. 5 6 spd. with 450 smiles on it.
He likes to grind a bit going into third when it's cold, but NOT if I set up the seat to get the clutch pedal to the floorboard when shifting. Once he's warmed up, no grinding at all. From what I hear here, this will wear in
(I hope!)

No problems on my 6 spd. except sometimes it's a little stubborn about going into reverse. I had driven a Ford 6 spd. before and had to get used to this one, but once I did it shifts great.

My 2001 just went to the shop for warranty work on the gear box. The dealership brought and left me a new 2001. 5 6 speed for me to drive while mine is being repaired. Good 5 star dealer. They come and get my truck and leave me a Dodge diesel to drive. The steering is good on this one. It has 335 miles on it. I have driven this one and the gears do not grind. My 2001 is a 5 speed so this is the first one I have driven with a 6 speed. I don't think I would want a 6 speed. Too much shifting. But it is ok. Have noticed I have to watch where I shift because the gear shift pattern is tighter than my 5 speed. Also reverse in in the wrong place. #ad

My six speed was tight at first, then as it "broke in" shifting improved. At 3,500 miles changed to Amsoil lubricant and was surprised that trans needed to "re-seat" the syncros again. The trouble appeared to be that there was not enough friction between the syncro ring and the body of the gear it occludes against. Therefore the trans had a hard time accelerating the shafts to match speeds. If I "hit" the shift dead on went right in, I you missed the RPM you had to lean on the shifter and wait. After 200 miles decided improvement was noted. Now 6000 miles later I must say trans is silent, shifts like butter at every gear, except reverse which just occasionally won't match up. (At a standstill) Totally changed out to synthetic lubes getting 18. 7 MPG highway/15. 3 MPG around town (Always running hard of course!) Rich

It sounds like to me if it's going to grind it grinds right from the get-go. My 6 sp has been ok right from the start, only got 3,000 miles on her and everything is great!! I hate to here about all you Guys that are having transmission trouble, thats a tough fix.
