i replaced the wheel bearing on my 94 this morning and when i pulled the old one out the axle shaft slide right out, should they do that? should there be a bearing on the axle tube to hold the shaft from flopping around or do they use the bearing to hold the axle?

The shaft will come out. It's preferable to keep it in the axle. There is a chance the axle seal may leak now that it has been disturbed.

The wheel bearing support the shaft at the out end and on the drivers side the spider gear supports the inside end. On the passenger side the inside end is supported in the CAD.
