A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Alaska

Figured I would repack the wheel bearings before leaving for Fla in a couple weeks (1000 miles each way).

2000 Terry 30' 5er. 2000 miles per year for aprox for 3 years. Results, First 2 wheels did not really need to be repacked but I had to find something to do with this Amsoil Racing Grease :)

After doing the Pass side last Thursday I figured if it never stopped raining I would be alright. Today the sun came out for the first time in about a month so I went for it tonight after work. LR no problem, LF I find the outer bearing was just starting to go bad. (same one that went bad on my last 5er) AS soon as I pulled it out I could see the silver flakes all over the cage between the bearings. After cleaning it I found 1 roller was really marked bad. It had gotten water in it and rusted the bottom roller over the winter. Good thing I finished the job!

Ran down to Napa, there like $7. 00 each so I bought 2. The extra one got packed and put in a bag along with some extra grease and the old race from the bad one, that I had ground down to use as a driver.

Good thing I got around to this, I don't think it would have made it to Fla!

Anyway, I guess I should do this every spring. Sure it only cost $7. 00 now, but if that bearing had gone bad on the road I would have been up Shis Creak. I have fixed many bearings where I had to cut the old inner race off with a torch, but I don't carry one of them around in the camper.
