hi all. my fuel pressure has began to drop, not much (from 14@idle &10@ w. o. t. to 12&8@w. o. t. )but i know whats going to happen soon. what pressure does this have to drop to for the stealer to have to replace it ?

Press should

be a min of 8 and from what I know this is the DC spec and if its below this at WOT they should be replacing it. The "newer" revisions run from 16-20#'s at idle and I read about 10-11 at WOT (just before de-fueling at max rpms) in still "stock" condition.

Have over 90k on it and on 4th pump w/spare under back seat.

SOTSU!!

mine is at the stealer, been fighting this problem for a month now. I have got it belching black and white smoke now. I can't believe they let something this problematic continue. 45,000 miles

Gary

i forgot to mention, only 10,000 miles on it. this is the best truck ive ever had , other than the lift pump gettin lazy ,no other problems.

Tell white lie!!

Just be sure when you do call to get something done, that you don't ask them to just check it out. You need to tell them that it has not been running right, starting, etc. Some stealers will blow you off, if you just want to have it "checked".

i told them everything and that they are bad for this and their response was hmm, we don't replace that many. I know this is the last straw with mine. this thing has been a pain in the rear from day one. from track bars to water in the fuel to pump problems to who knows what is next. I have owned a lot of trucks in my life but not one like this. This was my first diesel and probably will be my last. Yes i get a lot of attention with it and when it is good it is good, but when it is bad it is bad. It seems more often than not it is bad. I wouldn't classify it as a lemon, i am just hitting the design flaws that these trucks are known for. I would hope that when you spend that much money for a truck, that you would get something of higher quality than that. I keep hearing horror stories, oh when this tears up thats a $5000 part or that is $840. Dodge doesn't make trucks like they used to.

I went through this. . your border line on the pressure. And if the tech doesnt listen to you, he only does it in the bay and he wont see the lower numbers you do when driving. . that was part of my battle, but I saw 2-3psi@WOT. .

After many discussions and calls to the star line. . he finally took if for a ride and saw 5psi@WOT. . DC said it always must 8 or above 8. . so DC gave permission to the dealer to replace the lp.

i know he drove it alot this week and before i took it in i ran it hard. My dealer is starting to become more famliar with diesels and they always take care of me, they have been known to go above and beyond to satisfy me. The first time i took it to a diesel shop, thinking they would be better at it. Used to that is where the dealer sent the diesels to, but i think they have found out like i have the diesel shop isn't that great.

Gary

I had mine in for a recall item last week, and I asked them to make a judgement on the pump. I see 12 at idle, 9 at cruising, and 4-5 at WOT. That looks to me to be a candidate for replacement. But, they say 10 or over at idle is the number. They're nice about it, but they don't see many diesels, so they just aren't that in tune with it. I thing BGDUMMY is right - you have to tell them it's not running right before they take action. I'll continue watching mine, but I'm convinced it's dying. I have a heck of a time getting it to fire after a filter change. I have to use a lot of pedal to get it to start back up.

F. Dave,

the tech at your shop is going by the FSM... and the only other thing he will do is check it at 3200rpm. . if he read an earlier service note.

But the only way for him to get the most up to date info is by calling the Star line. . where some clerk will read from the latest memo on the lp issues and the latest number..... and if you can get the tech out of the shop for a ride for WOT, the Star line clerk-tech, will accept that number and if it falls below their minumum number , they will direct your tech to replace the lp.

Make sure tank is low.......

That will help bring down the pressure when you take it to the stealer. For the time it would have taken to De-bomb the truck, I just got one from Cummins and replaced it in less than 1/2 hour.

BWB- I hear ya, and there was a time I would have bitten the bullet and avoided the hassle and done the same thing. However, my truck is still under warranty and it kills me to think of spending $140. 00 at Cummins for the part when that money could better be used for other things (i. e. gauges, etc. ). Or to look at it another way, that 140. 00 is almost a third of what it would cost for a fueling box!

I like to think I'm getting smarter about my money as I get older (no offense intended, believe me) and I try to watch every dime as closely as I can. Not to be cheap, but to spend wisely.

It would have been SOOOO easy to just cut the stealer out of the loop entirely and do it myself, but they'd like that, wouldn't they?

Different strokes for different folks. ;)

Had mine into

the dealer for an oil leak (which is still not fixed) and asked them to check fuel pump press. The tech took it out and performanced chk'd it and said it would do 60 in 9 sec. and average is 14 to 17 sec. so pump must be ok. ?????? I had the ez box removed when they drove it. These guys are real rocket scientist. :D :D

I'd stay the heck away from that dealer!

What's next? The mech pops the hood, says 'Yep, it's got a motor, it must be fine'? :-laf

Dave, Dave, Dave. You are a perfect candidate for a replacement LP. Just ask MNCumminsLVR. I'm sure he is well-versed in the intricacies of dealerships.

Seriously, the pump may be fine for now, but IT WILL GO SOON! Probably sometime in the next 3 months (that puts failure in November / December). Mine did the same thing you describe. The only difference is that my dealer is awesome!!! I called and told them that it was below spec and that it needed to be replaced, that afternoon it was being replaced under warranty. They didn't even question my mods, gauges, evidence, or nothing. Although I had video to prove it. Get yours replaced.

Now, if they still won't, the setup I've been running has been working very well since April. Although, this will require BOMBing your truck *gasp*. If you want more ins and outs of this setup, drop me an email. It's really very simple and pretty cheap. Even you can do it.
