If I put in a 2nd gen front seat it is still a first gen

If I put on 2nd gen wheels it is still a first gen

If I put in a 2nd gen rear axel it is still a 1st gen

If I put in a 2nd gen transmission it is still a 1st gen

If I remove the mechanical lift pump and install an electric lift pump it is still a 1st gen

If I upgrade the camshaft it is still a 1st gen

If I put in custom fuel injectors in it is still a 1st gen

If I put on a 2nd gen exhaust manifold it is still a 1st gen

If I put on a 2nd gen exhaust housing it is still a 1st gen

If I put in a 2nd gen down pipe it is still a 1st gen

If I put on a 2nd gen turbo on it is still a 1st gen

If I put in a 2nd gen intercooler it is still a 1st gen

If I put on a 2nd gen cylinder head it is still a 1st gen

But

If I put in a 2nd gen fuel injection pump it’s not……………

Why?

If I had the money, all of that would be done to my truck. Don't worry about whether or not it's "truly" a first gen or not.

The main reason is because the only true difference between the generations is the fuel pumps.

I think because there is such a difference in the HP/Torque levels between the 2 pumps. Even starting out stock with no mods, a great difference, start adding tweaks and light years of difference show up. So a line has to be drwan some where and the pump is it.

I don't know about that... our pumps are capable of producing about 500hp so far, and the VP 44 on 24v trucks are truck about that point too.

The only true monster pump is the p7100. We all have basically the same engine... we all have Cummins, it's just the periphials that set us apart.

the main difference

Hummmmm. I am begining the think that CB has spent so much time under the hood that he hasn't backed off enough to see that there is 'slight' difference in the sheetmetal. Maybe he can't see the second gens behind him for the smoke and hasn't noticed the grills. Go boy.

I think anything that you do personally qualifies as an upgrade and would not impose a second gen demerit. Now if anyone can get the VE up to the output of the p7100, that would qualify them for over a thousand attaboys not mention a bunch of HPs. But if they have a runaway and blow the engine- - - - that is one awsh*t, and everyone knows that one awsh*t cancels all attaboys.

I don't think there's any problem with making a frankenstein truck, I've debated on it myself lately. The only problem is you need to think about the costs... such as: "would it cost more to put all this second gen stuff on my truck, or if I just bought a new truck. "

I'm debating with that in my head as we speak.

As far as I'm concerned, a 1st Generation is a 1st Generation as long as the body isn't changed. It's no different than putting a late-model TPI engine in a '69 Camaro - it's still a '69 Camaro... but better. ;) Hell, my parents had a '32 Ford pick-up that had a 350 Chevy crate motor, AC, heat, and cruise - none of which were even available in 1932;) - and it was still a "'32 Ford. "

There were quite a few "improvements" made to the 2nd Generation trucks that I'd love to have on my 1st Gen: trans with a lock-up converter, Dana 80, better brakes, more comfortable seat, etc.

I guess there are purists in the CTD crowd just like any other. That's what keeps things interesting - if we all liked the same stuff life would be pretty boring... . ;)

Well CB, back off and decide if you like the shape of the thing. The longer you keep the first gen the more you will stand out from the herd. There were only 180k of them in the beginning and there are around 800k of the later models. Price of stuff isn't the question. You probably could have already bought a second gen for the money you have invested. It is the same for either truck. You ain't gon'a leave the second gen alone. You done fell over the edge of the pit on bombing and ain't never gona crawl out.

A possible solution. Own both and promise to leave one of 'em stock- - - - I said PROMISE.

But I think you will come back to the first gen.

If all the motor is in plain view, it shares no interior bits w/a neon or Intrepid, has a near vertical windshield and a rattle in the doors, itsa 1st. gen.

What? It's just a way to look at things. Sometimes I wonder if buying a new truck would be more cost effective and cause fewer headaches than stripping this old thing down and making it like I want it.

Chris,

You better watch it, or your top secret project may become public by your own slip. I'd say keep the pickup you got; it's paid for, runs well enough, and you seem to come across good deals on parts, et al ;). Now if I could just find an intercooler, and a place to crash, I'd be out in Loveland CO by the weekend, working Old Blue to death:). Why do you want to strip yours down and rebuild it from the ground up? Seems like a waste of money, to me, esp after a mile in mine and all its rattles; yours will instantly become a Rolls by comparison.

I had to edit the post to protect national security

Geee, Pastor, you dont miss a thing, do ya? Ummm... ... aaahhhhh... ... . I wouldnt go as far as to say he actually bought some parts... . Told me of some deals he came across, so to speak. Insider trading, top secret. If either of us told you, I'd have to whack all involved.
