I am so tired of hearing more gears are better behind the CUMMINS 6.7. I tow heavier than most at 35k combined West Coast and the small difference in rpm’s between my gears works just fine. 6th or 10th gear is the same and is where I tow 95+% of my towing.

Personally I will stick with the dependable AISIN measly 6 speed.

The 47RE OD ratio is .69 compared to your Aisin .63. Sounds like you'd be fine with a 4 speed based on your described needs.

Key point is "within reason"... Most batteries are made in China and they aren't really concerned about curbing emissions in the least, so good thing we don't share the air.. of wait.... WE DO.

Until you own and drive a 10 speed.....then it will be the best transmission ever. ;)

yeah... Im on the fence here, I could understand the benefits to closer gear ratios, IE same final, but I drove both the Ford and GMC with the 10spd and I did not care for it. I like the 6spd, the E-brake performance with it, etc.. IMHO the 10spd is for folks who really want to eek out that last mpg (maybe) or guys who do alot of low speed driving and need converter lock in low speed... JM2C

We have KW single axle trucks with box and they tow a modest 12k trailer. They have the 6.7 cummins and Allison 6 speed. They are pigs. We have to climb steep hills on dirt roads at slow speed and they take about 10 minutes to get up to 65mph on flat asphalt. I would like the new Allison 9 speed in these trucks over the 6. They both serve their purpose but as said earlier, one size does not fit all.

Right, because they are specced to stand a lot of abuse without hurting anything and hopefully will be reliable for the long haul....Ryder and Penske make boatloads of money using that very spec.

Took 5 minutes and did a yard survey at this dealership I'm at today....looked a five brand new M2 Freightliners, all Cummins powered. At least four have the 6.7.

Beverage Body
Dry Van
Single Axle Tractor
Refuse Body
Tandem Axle awaiting a body and third axle...

All have Allison 6 speeds....these trucks all have to work for a living and are specced with durable powertrains.

Just sayin'....

To be clear all of those are REAL Allison’s not re branded.

Too funny. The reason it’s a slug is its detuned!!! 100 gears are not going to make it faster.

 You must have missed the part about climbing steep hills, a lower gear would definitely help. It is detuned and I'm willing to bet you a pay check that the 9 speed would get it up to speed faster than the 6 but that wasnt really the point, it was a comment. If I wanted a laugh I would read all the fanboy posts you have made about your Aisin, I lost track, how is that going?

If I were constantly going from 0-60 more gears would make sense but the fact is that’s not how a Cummins is normally driven.

Someone who claimed to work for Allison R&D (who was trying to set people straight on the gm transmission) stated that Allison lost the bid for FCA to ZF. Allison was putting up their 9 speed. This was dated 3 months ago, Take it for what its worth.

Although just a gas 1500, was running around in my wife's 2019 Ram 1500 with the 8spd. Since we've been having this discussion, i paid closer attention to it's shifting today. Getting on interstate with 100ft acceleration lane, I stepped into it... I could barely feel the shifts cuz the gears are closer together. Very fun to drive. BTW, been driving my 5500 almost everyday and you couldn't slap the smile off my face driving it. Actually, both are crazy fun to drive.

Cheers Friends! Ron

Same with my 4500......if you can’t tell already.
