I just bought my truck a month ago, and not knowing what kind of maintenance has been done I've been going through it. Today I figured I'd change my fuel filter for the first time. I bought a Haynes manual and a fuel filter and went to work. I got the filter changed filled the canister at least 3/4 full with new fuel put it back together and following the Haynes book proceeded to bleed the fuel line. It said to loosen the fuel supply line at the injection pump, start to crank the engine but dont start it then return the key to the on position and watch for fuel to come out of the fuel supply line. After atleast 20 attempts fuel still hadnt come out. So I took the filter back off and there wasnt a single drop more fuel than I had put in there. So thinking back to my days as fleet mechanic working on International 7. 3's in Ford Super Duty's I tightened everything up put the accelerator pedal to the floor and cranked the engine for about 20 seconds with no start, gave it a minute to rest and did it again, after about 10 seconds it started and seems to be running fine. I've alot here about lift pump problems Is it possible mine isnt working but the truck still runs okay?

Need to fill out your signature with your truck type.

If you have a 24V engine, then bump your starter and you should hear the lift pump run for 20 seconds. It will fill the canister. No need to crank it, or crack any lines. If you hear nothing, then your LP is bad and needs changed.

If you have a 12V then crack an injector line and crank it over until fuel comes out. Then tighten it up and it should start.

Thanks for the quick reply, I filled out my truck profile but apparently that doesnt come up with posts. I have a 24V in a 99 3500 There was the sound of a pump running after bumping the starter but it never filled the canister and fuel never came out of the fuel supply line.

If you can get the truck primed, yes it will run without the lift pump working. You do not want to run it though as it can damage the injection pump. Been there, done that. bg

even though you here the pump run it does not mean that it is pumping, i found that out when i changed my filter this winter. sometimes it would pump and other time it would just be running and no fuel.

Yep just got done with alot more searching and reading = bad lift pump. I guess I know what I'll be doin tomorrow and dammit I just filled my tank. :(

Click on 3D (on my sig. ) click maintainance, then click on replacement, then click on 24V lift pump replacement. It should walk you through the procedure. ;)

Installed my new lift pump today, bought it at local cummins dealer for $160. 00. The truck really runs different now. Acceleration used to be really flat from idle to about 1500, then from 1500 to about 2200 it would pull real good, and then flatten out again up to about 2600. I'd really have to push it to get it past 2600. Now acceleration is steady from idle all the way up past 2600. Also before I noticed that if you got near the exhaust your eyes would almost immediatly begin to burn but not anymore. Thanks everyone
