Just purchased a new Viair 35033 350C air compressor to be installed on/within my truck, as a permanent fixture. I'm thinking to install it in my bed, nestled next to my 53 gal. RDS fuel tank. Living in Wisconsin [Winter salting] discourages me from mounting it "below decks." I'm also not inclined to use a receiver tank, but will if I can get one for next to free, old fire extinguisher? ...otherwise pipe it to the rear under the gunwale [pronounced; gunnel?] with a convenient fitting to plug in my flex hose. More specifically, how did you assemble the compressor, press reg and maybe 'slinky' storage? Thanks for watching.

Also would like to see your wiring [16ga for 20A or 14ga for 40A service] hookup to the battery...

When refueling while RV'g, I sometimes find a tire chk req'd more air to even things out & several truck stops had NO island air service & their shop was closed. They report too many truckers just cut them off?!? Don't know--don't care. I'm bringing my own! We also air down the truck rears for bum'g around, then need to arrange with camp maint. to use their compressor & the maint man is out back somewhere with a dead radio, arrrrgh!

I know, one gets lulled into the comfort of the modern age conveniences & chooses to avoid being totally independent; nor do I raise & butcher my own beef for dinner. I guess this is one of those inconvenient necessities toward independance. Thanks for watching.

On my truck (see sig) I have the skid plate and I mounted it on the cross member. I drilled a hole in the storage box behind the drivers seat and routed the pump intake filter in there. Been working just fine for a couple of years now.

I ran #10 wire up to a relay in the engine compartment.

I will have to check out this install next time on the lift I have the pump and the air tank just have not installed want to be able to fill tires truck and 5th wheel then I can take the air comp out of the trailer.

TJJEEPER;
Your Southern CA mount looks just fine. After a Winter in Wisconsin salt, well, I suppose it might work OK. Viair says they're unit is "not waterproof", but rather "it's weather resistant". It looks pretty well sealed to me?!?

Walter, I'd have to agree that this is a Southwest install. Since this isn't a daily driver and rarely sees rain I didn't worry too much. I might think twice about a creek crossing that would submerge it for any length of time. 4X4 out here is for the sand where I take the toys in the toyhauler.

Mine is mounted between the bed and the fender area of my dually. Its up high out of the weather and isn't too bad for noise.

Passenger side of bed next to my auxiliary fuel tank and under cross bed tool box out of the weather, had one under the bed once, took a trip to Utah in the winter and pump froze up and ruined the pump, Monte

WalterJ,

Do not mount it anywhere under your truck. I mounted my compressor under the hood of my '06 and the WI/MN winters destroyed it and the relay block. The salt corroded it something fierce. I had my train horns mounted under the bed on the frame rail on the passenger side and they were also destroyed by salt. JMO, it's a lot of money to spend to have it ruined in a couple years.

I mounted mine on the inside wall of the box right above where you have your oil containers. Then I built a checker plate aluminum cover for it that is open on the underside for air movement, yet covered from rain. It does resonate the sound pretty good being on the sheet metal wall. I don't have a picture of the cover right now. I put a 5 gallon tank under the truck and an air chuck by the tailgate.

I went for broke and bought the Kilby belt driven compressor. Overkill for sure. I mounted air chuck in the rear brackets of my running boards and I have an air tank under the passenger doors. David

You should try putting rubber bushings on the bolts between the compressor and the box. Might help with noise and vibration. I do like where you mounted it.

Bob V; Sounds interesting. So u bolted it to the bed sidewall, from within the 'outer' bed panel(s)? Man, a pic would sure help. Wally

mpaulson; Nice plumbing job & I never thought of terminating the air line like u did...I'll consider that with some kind of rain cover to keep ice out of the fitting, but like your ingenuity.

I have a big weather guard tool box on my wife's 04.5 and I mounted the compressor and tank inside and ran the lines out the bottom to the air horns underneath. I also put an air line at the bottom/front of bed for airing tires.

Here are some pics. I used a reinforcing plate inside the box and the rubber isolation bushings to mont the comp to the bed side

That's under the bed where all the road spray and salt and ice can get to it, Not good in the long run, Just my opinion from my experience, Monte
It is not under the bed, it is between the bed side and the fender, up high just under the bed caps. It has been installed for two Winters and you can see there is no road grime at all
