Where Is The Best Place To Retire

"OK", Where is the best place for retirement in the United States?. I like the mountains and wildlife and I would like to just sit on my front porch and drink beer and be able to shoot at gophers,etc,etc... without being hasseled by the man.

My vote goes to a place like Idaho. Very conservative, not too far from population. Weather is not too bad in Winter depending on where in Idaho. Good gun laws

I have lived in several states all over and really like Alabama. Very relaxed way of life. Property is still reasonable. Plenty of private areas to build. Lots of wildlife to add to the freezer/plate when desired. Weather is about as smooth as it gets. Not to cold (at least not for long spurts), not to hot (albeit, compared to the northern states it is) and always something to occupy your time outdoors. My . 02

I also vote for Idaho! That's where I wanted to finally end up but was out voted by the rest of the family. I really can't blame them. The entire family is on the east coast. We'd never see them.



There's a beautiful town up north in the panhandle, Couer 'D' Alene. It's just across the river from Spokane Washington. I was ready to buy a 20 acre plot up in the hills over looking Lake Couer D Alene. The northwest is really God's country. Absolutely breath taking!!! You have to experience it in person to really appreciate the beauty of the area! The local folks were extremely friendly and helpful.



Hopefully, before the man upstairs turns my lights off,,, I'd like to make at least one more trip to Idaho. Really fell in love with that state!

Theres a sweet golf course at Couer D'Alene. PGA tour goes there just about every year I do believe. Was that your motive for wanting to build there, so you could go shoot 36 everyday :-laf

My wife and I want out of the state of Ca. so bad but..... we also dont want to start over at the bottom in a house payment. Not only that but also our jobs. I have been in my current job 12 years and make good money and dont want to start again. We would love to get out of the valley but where???? I was born and raised in Arkansas and we both agree its a beautiful state but its much tooooooooooooooooooo hot in the summer.

Oh well... I still have 18 years before I need to be concerned about that. .

We have been full timing it for years now, in our fifth wheel and truck, and travel all over. We are in San Diego right now but will go to Oregon this summer. Have allways liked Oregon on the west coast and the Carolinas on the east coast. Both have very decent weather and are reasonable to live in for general cost of living. We both like the mountains and love to fish and both places fill that bill. Have not spent much time in Idaho but have heard many good reports on it. Might have to give it a try one year.

Deems almost fighten words Montana and Wyoming are horrendous places - take my word for it! Remember the Unibomber hid out there! And there are miltia survivalist freaks scattered about. Then there was the father/son "mountain men" guy who kidnapped the girl and hid out in the mountains for months. And let's not forget the cannibal around Gardiner who was caught with the fingers in his pocket. We still have our share of freaks, and it seems the farter you go out into the boonies, the more of them you run into. We don't have the Aryan Nations compound up north any more - they got sued and had to sell their land. It is now a human rights park! :-laf .



Way too many people moving here, causing housing prices to skyrocket, traffic congestion, SMOG, etc. , etc. I'm afraid it won't be great for too long.

My Favorite places:



1) Just outside Colorado Springs (in the city is too congested)

2) Rapid City, SD-- black hills, baby!

3) Bismarck, ND-- cold keeps the riffraff out

4)Western WY-- near the Tetons



I like Cheyenne pretty well. 30min from a larger city (Ft Collins) and 90 miles form Denver. Suits me just fine, except it can be a tad windy
