i have a 92 w-250 4x4 and would like to install a tach what options do i have? whats the best options and best place to purchase ? thanks in advance

I had Westach build me one to work with the factory harness. www.westach.com. Talk to Pete Cornelius. Model # I got was 2T3-1 with adjusting pot. The "2" represents 2 inch. They make larger.

Isspro makes one too from what I've read here. Might have a sticky needle though?????

Factory Tach?

I'd like to have one too. Is there any hope of buying a new or used tach that was offered as a factory option on our 1st gens?

I ordered online from ISSPRO

(link=http://www.issproinc.com/Tach.html)

their 2" tach p/n R8503 and their 1992 mounting kit p/n R8912-92.

This kit plugs into the already-available jack on the 1992 trucks under the dash just to the right of the steering column and connects to the tach. Lighting for the tach is taken care of by the kit.

How you mount it is up to you. I bought a standard right-angle mount at the local supply place. Then I put the tach into it backwards, and slid the mount into the place you put your fingers to pull out the ashtray. Some foam rubber inserted into the slot holds it in. That looks ok until I can change the 3-gage holder above the dash to a 4-gage holder and relocate it there.

I don't recall if I ever knew.

Suggest you open a new thread with the question "does the '93 have an 4-pin under-dash connector for tachometer hookup like the '92 does?".

Someone must know this.

thanks for all the replies but i just bought a tach from auto meter part #2888 nice looking unit havent installed it yet though .

I used an autometer diesel tach and it worked great. I have an early 1991 so I did not have the chance to use the under dash plug and that was the reason that I chose the autometer. If you search for some of my previous threads there are some pictures of my four gauge installation.

Good Luck,

Dan

Ok, could someone please enlighten me on this tach wire on 92 and 93 trucks. I have a 92 and would like to put in a tach. Does it have to be a diesel tach or is this wire a pulse from the altrnator or something that can be used with a standard tacch. Please enlighten me. Thanks!

Thanks, But,

Thanks, but could someone tell me which of the wires onnect to the tach. i. e. - which wire is the tach signal? What are the other three for? Thanks!

I can help alittle. One is ground,one is light, one is tach signal and one is ?.

The wire colors are black, orange, red, grey.

I bought the factory tach and just pluged it in so I'm not a big help.

Sorry.

From the ISSPRO tach installation instructions:

Black = DC Ground

Orange = Lamp positive

Black (shown as Red in the Service Manual) = DC positive switched

Grey(or Lt Blue) = Signal

auto meter tach

How easy was it to install the autometer tach on a 91. I found a model # 2308 that looks like it will work. Is this the tach you used?

Autometer Tach # 2888 for 1991 CTD

I used the diesel tach part number 2888 from autometer. I bought it from summit racing for 114. 95 and that included a gauge cup, the alternator transducer and the gauge! It was a super easy install. I would recommend it to anyone. It will work for any truck with an alternator regardless of engine or number of cylinders. The only hurdle is that you must calibrate it. At first I used the no-load high idle of 2600 to calibrate it, but I just bought an optical tach off of ebay for $60 to use for calibration. It turns out that I was off by about 50rpm. I think that it really matches the original gauges nicely. Check out my truck pics in the readers rigs section.
