Transmission Idea

Ok, there is getting to be some good information here! My question now is: does the IH/structural block have the same motor mount bosses on it that a Dodge block would have? I would like to get the conversion mounts from someone instead of fabbing my own. I have not been able to visit the local Cummins parts dealer so I have no info on the 6. 7 crank, rod, and pistons to share yet.

What kind of power and torque would I be able to get out of a built 6. 7 B with twins. I want a streetable truck without water or alcohol injection.

5 million horsepower.

Oh no, now the comedians are coming out. What would be a realistic hp and torque goal? This would be my everyday driver. I just what to be able to pull any trailer I hook to it. Also the truck has the ZF five speed. Can this transmission be built to hold up to serious power?

My 53 block just cracked in the typical place, going to stich lock it for now to see if it holds.

I had a Cummins from a 96 Dodge that I just stripped down and it has the IH logos behind the timing cover. This one is for the race truck...

I have seen three 53's crack now in 6 months. Not the block of choice IMHO.

My 1996 block was an IH block and the head was also. When I had Haisleys do the build up he said that the IH blocks/heads had a better nickle content in them but there was one downside that these blocks had and that was when they were cast there was a possibility of casting imperfections around the cam bore and the water jackets and leaks could happen... he had my block presure tested due to this and passed with flying colors.

Also, for those that don't know... the head is also stamped right beside the rear engine lift bracket. If you have an IH head there is a good chance your block might be too!

I will post a pic of that tomorrow for you all.

Thanks... RyanB

It is a Diamond with the line thru it. I will post a picture of it tomorrow if I remember to take a picture... time for some updates of my project anyway!

Here is a very blury pic of the symbol on my head. It is located right at the back of the head by the engine lift.

Here is the pic!

The stock torque rating is 470 for the ZF5. Anything over 350hp, and the truck is being used hard, I would look for another transmission. There really arent any upgrades for these transmission besides clutches. The ZFs are good transmissions, and if you really want to run one, Id look for a ZF6 (rated at 570 tq), but if you are planning on twins and some SERIOUS power, Id look to an NV trans. They have been proven to last behind serious power. The super high power PSD boys are too few and far between to make an educated guess as to how strong the ZF6 really is. I do know that they will last at 400hp all day long however.

On another note, I have a 96 12V in my Ford, and when I rebuilt the motor before the conversion, I remember seeing IH logos on some of the parts.....

the 53 brazilin blocks are terrible i drive a 99 dodge cummin dullay and i just got a grack 4 inches long they suck ive done my research see the 98 and 99 brazilian blocks had a bad batch see there metal isnt as strong as the ones that are made in mexico now... im stuck in a bind now because im low on money and no ride

Moulder,

whatever yoy do, do NOT get a 53 block, mine cracked and I replaced it with a 01 mexican block. The block that has a bunch of small numbers just below where the inj. pump mounts is the mexican... I just had it done and it works great.

When my block cracked, I tried the Lock N stitch repair... didn't work... another guy did it and made a new crack 3" from the old one so stay away from the 53...

I would say your twins and box and such setup might make 400 - 500 rwhp... with no nitrous. . Water/meth would be a good thing as it lowers EGT's

I second the vote for a 6 speed manual unless you modify the Heck out of an auto with tripple lock and such.

The G56 on the new trucks uses the NV271 transfercase and that would be best with a new 3rd gen truck block. but yeah, build the heck out of the inside with that crank!!
