i got a dana 70 rear from a 89 ctd 3/4 ton truck for my cummins conversion. is it a dana 70 u? or which model is it and what spline where most of the axles?

axle ratio

If it hasn't been taken off and thrown away, there is a small metal tag under one of the cover bolts. It will have the ratio stamped into it. Just because it is from an 89 truck doesn't mean that it has to be a 3. 07 but there is a very good chance that it is. Especially if the transmission was a 727. I can't tell you anything about splines. I remember from a post that the splines are different from the other dana 70s. I believe that I am correct in saying that nothing on the 70u will interchange with the others.

IIRC those were 70 2Us and they have a 31/32" pinion offset compared to a 5/8" off set for most other 70s. This means a very limited gear ratio selection.

3. 07 gears are the only ones that fit that rear and the gears can not be bought new anymore. They do not make the housing for it anymore either.

5 years ago I had to buy a axle for my dually. It took 6 months to find one and it cost $1500+ shipping.

Dodge still has the 3:07 gears in stock. The housing went N/A 6 years ago. Complete assy's went N/A 5 years ago. I tried to get a new assy. They were out of stock then. A new complete would have been $1650. if they would have had them.

A 3/4 ton axle would be a little less than a dually axle would be. There were more SRW axles made than DRW.

Dodge has not had those gears for a few years. I know 2 people that tried to get them and couldn't. My brother tried to get them for a friend and dodge said N/A. If dodge has them now it is news to me. Maybe enough people want the gears that dodge has a new run on them?

I'll check agin when I get over around my dealer. As of 6 months ago the dealer I use was still showing them in stock at the Chicago warehouse.
