Which Hitch???

I just ordered a one ton Q/C SB, and I'll be pulling a 5th wheel, which hitch would you guys reccomend? I keep hearing about a slider hitch, what is this? The trailer will weigh in at about 10k - 12k when loaded. Any reccomendations are appreciated.

Fairly cheap and trouble free is the Reese 15k or 16k slider. From there you can go up to over $2k plus labor. I opted for the Reese stationary non rocking hitch for my long bed. It's been in two previous Dodges. It'll probably be in the next one too!

Your question about "what is this" regarding a slider type fiver hitch. It's my understanding that this hitch allows the actual hitch part to slide back to give you extra clearance for backing. It's easy to hit the cab on a sharp back up with a short bed. You don't run this way as the hitch weight is too far back. After completing your backup manuever, you unlatch, back up and return the hitch part to normal over the axle position. You don't have to have a slider with a short bed. It just minimizes the likelyhood of a boo boo during backing. My truck is a SB & I'm looking for a deal on a fiver toy hauler. I'll use a slider with it. WOrth the extra money. I'm not that good at backing anyway!

I am taking my truck in tomorrow to have my hitch installed and pick up my new 5th wheel trailer. I opted to spend the extra money and get the Pullrite SuperGlide hitch. This is an automatic sliding hitch. The hitch starts sliding back when trailer to truck angle exceeds 16 degrees. This hitch is not cheap, but it has many features make it worth the money.



First, no worries about crashing the corner of the trailer through my rear window if I turn too sharp without moving the slide. This is my first 5th wheel and I just wanted to eliminate one major thing to worry about.



Another feature is that the hitch mounts to the frame with only 4 large pins that go through the bed. When the hitch is removed from the truck, you only have four 2" holes through the floor of the bed. The hitch also sits a couple of inches off of the floor of the bed so that it won't crush my factory bed liner.



One draw back is that it requires a special plate mounted to the King Pin on the trailer. This prevents the trailer from being towed with a standard 5th wheel hitch. You either have to remove the plate from your trailer, or you can purchase an adapter from Pullrite. This would be necessary if your tow vehicle breaks down on the road or you take your trailer in for service. A side benefit is that it makes it more difficult for someone to steel your trailer.



I figure the hitch probably cost me an extra $10 month, worth it to me.

PullRite makes a great hitch. I like the strong and fool-proof clamping mechanism and the gimbal hitch mount, they also have no-drill, no weld brackets for our hydroformed frames.

I have a Pull Rite 24K automatic slider on my 2003 SB truck. Works as advertised, bunch of bucks, but they allow you to pull a fiver with a SB and not worry about hitting the cab. For me personally, I would not trust myself with one of the manual sliders, too much on your mind while towing to worry about a manual slider.

Thanks alot guys, I think I'll look into a Pullrite 16 k auto slider. I checked the price, and it's pricey, but I think it'll be worth it not having to worry about smashing the cab of my new rig. Thanks again for all the info.

You won't go wrong with the Pullrite. Pricey but built like a tank, well made and brilliantly engineered, no holes in my frame and great customer service to boot. The Pullrite is to hitches as Cummins is to diesels.

When I had a SWB I had the 16K Superglide. Superb hitch, if I had it to do over I'd get another Superglide. If you have any other questions you may look up my # in my profile and give me a call.

Put me down as one more with the Pull-Rite 16k Super-Glide. You don't have to think about it, and the best part is the clean bed when it's removed. I didn't know about the availability of an adapter plate for towing the trailer with a standard hitch--I'll have to look into that

Looks like Pullrite is the way to go for hitches, from what everyone is saying. I just bought a 2004 3500 LWB SRW Laramie 6-speed with a 4. 10 and need to put in a new hitch. I was told to get a Reese but they don't have any under-bed mounts. I had a Reese 15K in my 2500. Great hitch, but hated having the rails in the bed all the time. Don't want to mess up my new toy! I'll check out the Pullrite 20K. Thanks everyone!

If you have a LWB (long bed) truck, you don't need a slider hitch. If you hate the bed rails, take a look at the B&W turnoverball gooseneck with their companion RV (5th wheel) hitch. It leaves a clean bed when you're not towing your 5th wheel.

A friend has an 03 SRW SB and 20K Reese non slider that he pulls a 3575 Montana Big Sky with. It has the extended hitch pin and he has not had a problem in some real tight places. I opted to pay the extra $125 for the 16K Reese slider, but have not needed it yet either. The automatic hitches are nice, but I think the slider is not necessary on most of the new fivers with extended hitch pins.

If you are ever backing up with a SB and even with the extended hitch pin on UNLEVEL ground, you CAN take out the back glass without a slider hitch. Ask my son.



I now have the Pullrite Superglide and can't even come close now. I even carry things between the cab and the hitch and can backup with spare room.

Thanks, Rusty, I didn't know about B&W but that's a neat setup. I wish I had gotten a slider hitch when I had my 2500 shortbed--I towed a 5th wheel with an extended pin and a few times I almost caught the corner of the truck. I don't know which vehicle would have won that match but, either way, I would have lost!!
