ATF+4 uses an API Group III mineral hydrocracked base stock that can marketed as a synthetic following a ruling 5-6 years ago in a lawsuit between Castrol and Mobil over synthetic motoroil.
So the answer is yes and yes. Yes, it can be called a synthetic and yes it is a mineral oil. :{
The problem you're going to find, to be a warranty approved / recognized ATF+4, Daimler Chrysler requires that the product be an exact copy of the factory version - so all warranty approved ATF+4 transmissions, regardless of brand name, will be made with the same type base stock and additive package. Any using a Group IV or Group V type synthetic base stock will not have factory approval. So if you want a true synthetic, you will have to choose to use a superior product without the endorsement of the factory. I'd do it in a heartbeat - a product like Royal Purple Synchromax.
