hello, i recently bought an 05 ram, gtting ready to do my first oil change at about 750 miles. i've never had a diesel before and am not sure which oil to go with. i've seen delvac 1300, delo 400, rotella t, and valvoline premium blue in the local parts store, and walmart and home depot. is there an oil to stay away from in this group? i plan on using fleetgaurd filters and change the oil every 5000 miles rather than the 7500 the owners manual recomends. your opinions and info are appreciated.

From everything I've read on here, they're all good oils. Rotella has a rather obnoxious smell for the first 500-1000 miles after a change. For that reason, I quit using it.

Delo 400 is my poison, along with Fleetguard Stratapore filters.

You can (and should) change the oil at 5,000 mile intervals if that's what makes you comfortable. As for me, I'm happy with the longer interval because even Cummins recommends it.

One thing to think about... the oil filter is doing a better job (filtering finer particles) from 5,000 to 7,500 miles than it did from 0 to 5000.

Heavy-duty diesel rated motor oils are much better, now, than they used to be just a few years ago.

I don't believe you could go wrong with any of the choices, you've suggested.

You may want to try changing at the recommended OCI (oil change interval) & back that up with a used oil sample test. It will tell you what condition the oil is in & if you can go for longer or shorter OCI's. It's a bit of money but, will give you a good idea of what your oil looks like after, say, 7500 miles of use.

Personally, I chose the Chevron Delo 400 after reading about it on a website entitled "bob is the oil guy.com". There is a forum for light duty diesel engine oils (in pick up trucks, etc. ). This is a free website but, you do have to register. No big deal, and the information over there is amazing.

I believe your choice of Fleetguard filters is a great one. I've told this story here before. When I bought my first Dodge/Cummins (91. 5 W-250) I was driving through Cortez, CO. & saw a lot of the Dodge/Cummins, there. So, I stopped at the dealer & talked to the service mgr. asking him for any tips to make my truck last longer. He said, "Come with me" & took me to the back of the shop where there were 3 Dodge trucks. He went on to say that each one of them was having their engines rebuilt because the customers put the wrong oil filters in them. The oil preasure sucked the element apart & deposited the filtering material in the cooling nozzles underneath the pistons causing the engines to suffer an untimely death. He said to ALWAYS use the Fleetguard/Mopar filters. They are the same. Never forgot those words of wisdom.

This doesn't mean there aren't other filters out there that are good. You just KNOW the Fleetguard's will do the job, safely.

I use Delo 400 because I like to color of the bottle. Any of your choices will work fine and your choice of filters and time interval are good too.

I used Delo 400 on my 95. I now use whatever the dealer puts in under that 7 year free oil and oil filter change plan I was given on my 05. The oil filter is a Mopar, which I belive is a Fleetguard and the oil, I don't know.

Valvoline Premium Blue here ..... Fleetguard filter .....

I guess I just like the Cummins logo on the bottle and the fact that it was the factory fill. :)

I used Mobil Delvac 1300 for the first 12,000 miles... changed to Mobil 1 Truck and SUV 5w40 Oo. last week and seems to run smoother???? (wishful thinking??).

The only trouble I am having is trying to find more Mobil 1... all the local Walmarts are out... I guess there are a lot of folks using it.

Anyone know anouther sourece for MOBIL 1 T&SUV???

I use Valv Prem Blue for the same reason HoofinSoot stated (and the Fleetgaurd Stratapore filter).

Apparently, Mobil1 Truck & Suv Formula is low everywhere due to flooding at the packing and warehouse facility (from Katrina I assume).

Same here, Valvoline is good stuff.

Let me introduce you to Gino's Garage Everything they sell is the correct stuff for your truck! It ain't worth messing with. The blown up filters are a fact, and it will take out your engine. Go into your dealer with a Fram on there and watch the guys face when he opens up the hood

I use the Amsoil 15W-40 which is a PAO Synthetic, along with a Donaldson full-flow and amsoil by-pass.

Which Delo 400 are most guys using? Is there a synthetic and a regular oil, or is there just a synthetic. Any help and advice is appreciated.

Thanks

I do believe the Delo 400 is a synthetic, and they make it in a 0W-30 as well as a 5W-40 grade.

Mighty what?? :-laf :-laf :-laf

A tech at Cummin's Great Plains in Omaha, NE said that they had found foaming problems in the ISX-B Cummins engines, with people using Rotella-T. So I use Mobil Delvac 1300.

Your oil filter is probably the best choice.

The only Delo 400 I know of is 15W40, comes in a blue 1 gallon jug and is NOT a synthetic. I get it by the case at Sam's Club.

Yes, I know it comes in other size containers, but I just buy the gallons. :-laf

Bob
