I bought a 96 CTD about 4 months ago, and at its first oil change, i filled it up with Amsoil Series 3000 10w-30 and dropped in one of their oil filters. Supposedly the 10w-30 has better wear protection. But the owners manual says 15w-40. I know the oil debate has gone on forever on this bulletin board and several others, but I am curious if on my next change if should go to their 15w-40. I live in texas and deal with hot summers. Am I hurting my CTD, or am i breaking even using the 10w-30(greater wear protection) vs. the 15w-40? Another question, I recently read in the latest inssue of TDR about the differential lube/oil change. I believe it says that the amsoil 75w-90 is almost to slick for the limited slip differential(page 90, Sidebar on Friction Modifier Proportions). Any feedback or comments on anyone else's experiences and what others been dumping in their differntials would be greatly appreciated.

In my above post I listed the incorrect amsoil i used. At my first oil change i used their series 3000 5w-30. Sorry for the incorrect information.

I am running Series 2000 75-90 in my rears and transmission as are a lot of others. 20k on the oil, 104k overall with no problems yet.

QRTRHRS, you said you are running the Series 2000 75-90 in your transmission aswell. What are the advantages of using this over their
synthetic ATF?

Cooker, Amsoil Series 3000 5w-30 is CH-4 rated, their series 2000 oil is not.

DB,
I'm using the series 3000. Haven't changed oil for over 1 1/2 years (have bypass filter). I use it for the cold start abilities. I can't always plug in when it's cold (the heaters cycled this morning!) #ad
I makes a huge difference on cold (below zero)starts.

As you are in Texas and it probably stays a little warmer there, I would go with the 15w-40 if you don't need to plug in.

Sorry for the bad information.

Your right Gene I mixed some numbers up. Although on Amsoil's website I didn't find a series 3000 10w30. Am I still mixed up (maybe that's a loaded question #ad
).

Don't get me started about Amsoil's website, they hired some real Hucklebucks to build it and, well, &^&%%$(*^)^%.
Just go to mine!

You won't find a Series 3000 10W-30.

Series 2000 0W-30 for gassers,(replaces all 30Ws)
And Series 3000 5W-30 Diesel oil.

You will be seeing all heavy diesels going to the 30w, Amsoil is just ahead of the game.

MGM,

If you look up above, i believe it is the third post, QRTRHRS states that he is running Series 2000 75w-90 in his rear diff and also in his transmission. Is this a good idea and if so what would be the advantages over Amsoils Synthetic ATF? Also, i believe that amsoils oil filter is rated at 5 microns, do you happen to know what Fleetgaurd's Microglass filter is rated at? Thanks for all the info Gene..... appreciate it.

I ASSUME he has a 5 speed Trans!!
But yes, running gear lube in an automatic would be a very bad idea, but good reading for the TDR Members! LOL #ad

The transfer case does take ATF though.

Amsoil SDF(non by-pass) efficiency is 94% at 10 microns. Last time I talked to Tech they said it actually goes down to 7 microns (the size of Arizona dust or something like that).
The Fleetguard Stratapore Tech people told me that they go down to 10 microns at a 63% efficiency. The microglass would be less than 63%, I would assume. I never checked on it.
Gene

The By-Pass unit will filter as fine as 1/10 of a micron, and also remove water. It works with any oil.
