I'm heading to Reno next week, and have a choice of tires.

My daily drivers are Toyo A/T Open Country 285/70/17. These are great, and have about half the tread left.

My others are Toyo M/T Open Country 35/12. 5/18. These I typically use just for the desert and off road. They have almost all the tread left.

The trip is going to be I-80 from San Francisco to Reno. I don't anticipate any problems or departures from the road.

I'm thinking that the M/T's have a lot more tread in case of snow, but have never driven them in the cold. Any feedback? Thanks

I would run the AT. I scored a set of 35 Toyo MT for a birthday gift last summer. They are wearing quicker than expected. I found a cheap set of wheels and am running some cheapo firestones for daily use. Saving the Toyos for dirt and when I need to tow. They have over 1klb more capacity per tire than the daily firestones.

run the AT's. They have more biting edges in case you end up travelling on an icy interstate at some point. Put some weight in the truck bed to help out if you have to deal with icy roadways. Big, fat tires do poorly on ice covered winter roadways unless they are studded. I know this first hand as I commuted 200 miles a day across many horrible roads when I was working/schooling up in Idaho. The mud tires are great in the snow but dont have as much biting traction on ice as the AT's unless you get them siped.

I would mount the AT's and if the need arose you could always air them down to get a little more bite and surface contact area.

I think many here would love to have a choice with a set for daily driving then another for select duty. You seem to have the best of both worlds and an outstanding tire brand to utilize.

Do the AT's wear better than the MT's and provide longer mileage in the end or are they the same?

I ask because I am looking for another set for my truck and the Toyo choice is a no brainer but the choice between the above tread types is a harder one to make. I admit that I spend 80 percent of the time on the asphalt or concrete and use the Jeep for the fun stuff but the traction difference must be significant between the two tread designs.

Feed my brain guys!

I love the A/T's. The truck came with the BFG's, and I've had six sets of those on various vehicles. They might have lasted to about 75k, but the sidewalls were cut up from Baja rocks. So I dug around and got the A/T. s I love having the M/T's as well. I got those from Kore on the Welds, many moons ago. Trouble is, I don't get to Baja enough to put any wear on them, and I don't drive them on the street, so can't really gauge how they wear.

The A/T's wear faster than the BFG's, but I like the ride better.

I'll keep these on since I'll just be on the highway, and keep the M/T's for the summer in the desert.

I live near Carson City,NV and have run the TOYO AT's for the last two winters. They will handle anything mother nature will throw at you. I have been in solid ice and fairly deep snow and they hold the road well. Beat the hell out of the Michileins that came with the truck-they were like driving on ball bearing in the ice!

The AT's seem to wear faster only because the depth of tread is substantially less than that of the MT's. Both are awesome tires. I've blown through a set ofToyo AT tires in 12k doing burn outs, etc, but driving responsibly I ran almost three times that on a set. My Toyo MT's are going on 40K right now and they are just about down to the wear bars. I swear by the Toyo tires at this time. I've had some great luck with the BFG AT's on my old first gen(285/75/16), but the sidewall flex caused me some grief in my third gen truck on the highway(285/75/17). Some people will cry BS, but the tires were the only item that changed the handling issues of my third gen truck at 55mph +.

Paddy my AT's are at 33K and look like they will get 50K at this wear rate. I run 60psi all the way around and rotate every 5K. In my high desert coditions these Toyo's have been great. I will run them again.

the ATs should be better on the ice, the MTs i had only hooked in deep snow and mud, plus it has been warm in the day here in nv
